Grew up playing at Smithfields Country Club in Easley, South Carolina. His family lived on the 10th hole of the course. He won the club championship at 14 years old.

Started to play golf when he was 10 years old. His dad bought him a set of six clubs while on a travel baseball trip to Myrtle Beach.

Prepped at Hilton Head Christian Academy in Bluffton, South Carolina and Junior Players Golf Academy in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Named the 2013 South Carolina Junior Player of the Year by the South Carolina Junior Golf Association and the 2013 South Carolina Jay Haas Player of the Year.

Father, Dale, played college basketball at Furman University, earning three varsity letters (1978, 1979, 1980); he was a member of two Furman teams which made NCAA Tournament appearances (1978, 1980).

Fan of the Carolina Panthers (NFL football).

Played collegiately at Auburn University for four seasons (2015-19), winning three times as an individual and earning All-Southeastern Conference Second Team laurels in 2017 and 2019.
