Bayern Munich will host defending champions Bayer Leverkusen in a high-profile DFB-Pokal 2024-25 Round of 16 clash at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.

Furthermore, Bayern are unbeaten in their previous eight games across all competitions.

Earlier, the Bavarians began their DFB-Pokal 2024-25 campaign with a 4-0 win over SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball and later thrashed 1. FSV Mainz 05 with the same scoreline in the second round away from home.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-1 win against 1. FC Union Berlin in their last game in Bundesliga 2024-25 on Saturday.

Jeremie Frimpong and Patrik Schick netted a goal each to help the reigning Bundesliga champions claim maximum points from the game.

Having registered six victories, five draws and suffered one loss, Leverkusen are placed third in the Bundesliga 2024-25 standings with 23 points on the board.

Led by Spanish manager Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen started their DFB-Pokal title defence with a 1-0 victory over FC Carl Zeiss Jena. They later beat SV Elversberg 3-0 in the second round to set-up a mouth-watering Round of 16 clash with Bayern.

Earlier in May, Xabi Alonso’s men pipped 1. FC Kaiserslautern 1-0 in the DFB-Pokal 2023-24 final to clinch their second German Cup at the Olympiastadion Berlin.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are the most successful team in the DFB-Pokal history with 20 titles.

Karl-Heinz Thielen (16 goals) and Christian Müller (15 goals) finished as the top-scorers for the team in the championship-winning season.

Bayern Munich lead the Bundesliga winners list with 32 titles. The Bavarians won their maiden Meisterschale in the 1968-69 season, with an eight-point cushion and legendary forward Gerd Muller contributing 30 goals.

So for example, if a team in England won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, they will have completed the domestic treble as the League Cup is the secondary national cup on English shores.

To complete a genuine or the treble, a team must win their domestic league, the main domestic cup competition, and the premier continental title - UEFA Champions League. 

It’s worth mentioning here that winning Europe’s secondary prize, the UEFA Europa League, is permissible as far as being called a treble albeit it isn’t considered to be genuine by most fans who insist that it is a treble and not the treble.

All things considered, a team is said to have truly won the continental treble only if they win the domestic cup, the domestic league, and the top continental prize that is up for grabs.

Needless to say, not many teams have managed to complete the difficult task of completing the treble. Only seven teams in the history of European football have completed the treble. Scottish side Celtic was the first team to do the treble in 1966-67, while Dutch club Ajax was the second to do it in 1971-72.

Besides Celtic and Ajax, the other six teams to do the treble in football are PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City. Out of these seven sides, Barcelona and Bayern Munch are the only two sides to complete to treble twice.

Barcelona achieved the feat twice in 2008-09 and 2014-15 under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique respectively. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, completed the treble twice under the guidance of Jupp Heynckes and Hansi Flick in 2012-13 and 2019-20 respectively.

Manchester City is the latest team to accomplish the incredible feat. Coached by Pep Guardiola, City won the Premier League, FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League to complete a historic treble in the 2022-23 season.

They also moved into their stadium the Allianz Arena in 2005 for more matchday revenue and at present boasts some of the best training ground and stadium infrastructure in Germany, if not the world.

Manchester United 

Despite not having many trophies to show in the past decade, Manchester United command one of the most loyal fanbases in the world and remain the most successful club in the English Premier League with 20 titles. 

They won the Club World Cup in 2008 and have three UEFA Champions League trophies in their cabinet. Good matchday revenues made them earn more than the likes of Paris Saint-Germain last season with �?88m. They are the most loved and popular Premier League club on Instagram with over 61m followers. 

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 

Paris Saint-Germain is the undisputed kings of French football with 10 Ligue 1 titles. With the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, PSG currently has three of the best players in the world at the moment in the team. Besides their league titles, PSG also boasts a record 14 Coupe de France trophies and a record nine Coupe de la Ligues.

They have a following of over 70 million fans on Instagram and were the fifth-highest revenue-generating club in the 2021-22 season with �?54m. PSG’s stadium also generates a decent amount of revenue and their price on the share market has rocketed more than any other club on this list over the past couple of decades.

AC Milan 

Italian club AC Milan, with seven UEFA Champions League titles, is second only to Real Madrid when it comes to winning the premier European trophy. They also have 19 Serie A titles under their belt and five Copa Italias as a part of their trophy cabinet. 

Undoubtedly one of the most loved clubs in Italy, they most recently won the Serie A title in the 2021-22 season during which they generated a revenue of over �?64m. They have an over 13m-strong fanbase on Instagram and are more beloved than their city rivals Inter Milan.

Juventus 

While fellow Serie A club AC Milan dominated the European competitions, Juventus were busy accumulating trophies in Italy’s top-flight football league. 

The Old Lady has won a record 36 Serie A titles and generated a revenue of over �?00m in the 2021-22 season despite not winning the Scudetto. Arguably Italy’s biggest football club, they have a record 14 Coppa Italias, two UEFA Champions League crowns and are nearing 60m followers on Instagram.

Chelsea

Chelsea, who compete in the Premier League, are among the few clubs to win Club World Cup, UEFA Champions League and also the top-flight domestic league. 

They won the Club World Cup recently in 2021 and have two UCL trophies to show apart from six league titles. A few other trophies which they have won include a couple of UEFA Europa League triumphs, eight FA Cup trophies and five League Cups.

Bought for a whopping $5.4bn by an American consortium last summer, Chelsea is followed by over 39m fans on Instagram and generated revenue of over �?68m in the 2021-22 season.
