The India vs South Africa cricket rivalry is one of the most enthralling rivalries in modern-day cricket.

An India vs South Africa cricket match is one of the most-awaited fixtures in the cricketing calendar, be it home or away or any format of the game.

India was the first team to invite South Africa for a three-match One-Day International series in November 1991 after the apartheid policy had kept them out of international cricket for more than 20 years.

That was the first meeting between the sides with India winning the series 2-1. From then on, both India and South Africa have been part of some exciting duels in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

India and South Africa have met each other at the international stage on 164 occasions with South Africa being victorious 80 times and India winning 70 matches. There have been 10 draws with four matches ending without a result.

South Africa are marginally ahead in the race in the longest format of the game with 18 wins compared to India’s 16. A total of 10 matches out of the total 44 have ended in draws.

Incidentally, the rainbow nation remains the final frontier for the Men in Blue as they are yet to win a Test series in South Africa. The last series in December-January 2023-24 in South Africa ended in a draw with both teams winning one Test each.

In ODIs too, South Africa hold a superior record with 51 wins from 94 matches. India have won 40 ODIs with three of them getting abandoned without a result. Sachin Tendulkar created history by becoming the first player to score a double-hundred in ODI cricket, in a contest against South Africa at Gwalior in 2010.

Coming to the shortest format of the game, India holds the edge in T20Is with 14 victories from 26 matches. South Africa follow closely with 11 wins and a game being abandoned.

With that being said, let’s have a look at India vs South Africa head-to-head in cricket.

Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan has scored the slowest fifty in T20 World Cup history.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan took 52 balls to register his half-century against Canada in the T20 World Cup 2024 Group A match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.

Batting first, Canada rode on Aaron Johnson's 44-ball 52 to post 106/7 in 20 overs.

Rizwan opened the innings for Pakistan alongside Saim Ayub, who later, was out after making just six runs. Rizwan and skipper Babar Azam joined forces to contribute 63 runs for the second-wicket partnership. After Azam's dismissal, Fakhar Zaman added four runs. Rizwan (53) and Usman Khan (2) tied the loose ends as Pakistan sealed a win by seven wickets and 15 balls to spare.

South Africa’s David Miller scored the second-slowest fifty in T20 World Cup history.

David Miller took 50 balls to register the slowest fifty in T20 World Cups during a T20 World Cup 2024 Group D match against the Netherlands at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Earlier, South Africa rode on Ottneil Baartman’s 4/11 and two wickets each from Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje to restrict the Netherlands to 103/9 in their 20 overs.

In reply, South Africa were soon reduced to 12/4 in 4.3 overs on a tricky pitch in New York.

While Stubbs departed for 33, Miller remained unbeaten on 59 off 51 balls to guide South Africa to a four-wicket win in New York. Miller’s match-winning knock was laced with three fours and four maximums.

Earlier, former West Indies cricketer Devon Smith’s 49-ball half-century against Bangladesh at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in 2007 was the slowest fifty in T20 World Cup history.

During a group match in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007, Devon Smith scored 51 off 52 balls, along with contributions from Shivnarine Chanderpaul (37), Dwayne Smith (29) and Marlon Samuels (27) to help West Indies post 164/8 in their allotted overs. Devon Smith’s knock included six fours.

However, Bangladesh later chased down the target in 18 overs to secure a six-wicket win in Johannesburg.

Australia’s David Hussey features fourth in the unwanted list for the slowest fifty in T20 World Cup history.

David Hussey scored a 49-ball fifty against arch-rivals England in the T20 World Cup 2010 final at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

South Africa’s David Miller, India’s Rohit Sharma and Czech Republic’s Sudesh Wickramasekara share the record for fastest hundred in T20 internationals.

Getting runs quickly is the name of the game in international cricket’s shortest format, the T20. While it is not always easy for batters to get going from the word go, some players seem to have seamlessly adapted to the format and tend to score their runs at a brisk pace.

With 20 overs available to each side, there’s not much scope for individual milestones for batters whose main aim is to score at a rate of knots.

However, there have been quite a few players who have risen to the challenge and managed to get their personal milestones while simultaneously scoring runs quickly for their respective teams.

Here, we have a look at a few of those players who have made hundreds in T20 internationals without wasting many balls.

More specifically, let’s check out those individuals who have the fastest hundreds in T20 internationals to their name.

David Miller | 35 balls vs Bangladesh, 2017

South African middle-order batter David Miller set the record for the fastest hundred in T20 internationals in the second T20I of a two-match series against Bangladesh in October 2017. After being asked to bat first by Bangladesh, South Africa went on to post a huge total of 224/4 following their 20 overs. Miller was in belligerent form after coming in to bat at five and brought up his ton in just 35 balls before finishing on an unbeaten 101 off 36 deliveries. He struck seven fours and nine sixes in his innings and helped set up an 83-run win for the Proteas who won the series 2-0.

Rohit Sharma | 35 balls vs Sri Lanka, 2017

Two months after Miller created the record for the fastest T20I century, India’s Hitman Rohit Sharma matched the South African’s feat. In the second game of a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, hosts India were asked to bat first following the toss. Rohit Sharma opened the innings for the Men in Blue and proceeded to inflict damage on the Sri Lankan bowling attack. He made his hundred in 35 deliveries and finished his knock on 118 off 43 balls. Rohit Sharma hit 12 fours and 10 sixes during his innings as India posted 260/5. In reply, Sri Lanka could only manage 172 as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Sudesh Wickramasekara | 35 balls vs Turkey, 2019

A little less than two years after Rohit’s incredible knock, Czech Republic’s Sudesh Wickramasekara matched the record for the fastest century in T20 internationals. In the sixth game of the 2019 Continental Cup at the Moara Vlasiei Cricket Ground in Ilfov County, Czech Republic won the toss and decided to bat first against Turkey. With the score on 107/3, Sudesh Wickramasekara walked to the crease and launched an onslaught straightaway. He brought up his century in 35 balls and finished on an unbeaten 104 off 36 balls as Czech Republic posted 278/4 on the scoreboard. Wickramasekara struck eight fours and 10 sixes in his knock and helped set up a huge 257-run win for his team.

India’s star cricketer Rohit Sharma currently holds the record for playing the most T20 International matches

Since making his T20I debut against England at Kingsmead in 2007, Rohit Sharma has already featured in 147 T20 Internationals  - the most by any player in the shortest format of cricket.

Between 2007 and 2022, the current Indian cricket team captain has amassed 3,826 T20I runs in 147 matches at a strike rate of 140.37 while also maintaining a decent average of 31.36. He has smashed four centuries and 29 fifties in his T20I career so far.

Rohit is the fifth cricketer and second Indian to score 2,000 runs in T20I cricket. Virat Kohli, Brendon McCullum, Shoaib Malik and Martin Guptill are the four other cricketers to achieve the incredible feat.

Interestingly, Rohit was part of the Indian side that won the inaugural edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007.

The Nagpur-born cricketer also played a pivotal role in helping India clinch the inaugural T20I edition of the Asia Cup in Bangladesh in 2016.

Following his impressive run in the T20I format, Rohit was included as an opener in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Decade.

Pakistan batter Shoaib Malik is second on the list for the most T20 International matches.

The former Pakistan captain played 124 T20 internationals since making his debut against England at County Ground in 2006.

Shoaib Malik has scored 2,435 runs at an average of 31.22 and a strike rate of 125.64. He registered nine fifties to his name in international cricket’s shortest format.

Malik was part of the Pakistan team that won their maiden ICC World T20 title at the iconic Lord’s in 2009.

New Zealand’s Martin Guptill features third on the list. Between 2009 and 2022, Guptill has featured in 122 T20 Internationals so far.

The swashbuckling batter made his T20I debut against arch-rivals Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in 2009. The opening batter has accumulated 3,497 runs at an average of 31.79 and a strike rate of 135.80. He has hit two hundreds and 20 fifties in his illustrious T20I career.

After suffering a nine-run defeat in a rain-curtailed series opener, the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian cricket team will look to bounce back when they take on South Africa in the second one-day international (ODI) of the three-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Sunday, October 9. The match will start at 1:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).

IND vs SA Dream11 prediction for 2nd ODI 2022

Put into bat in a 40-over game, South Africa rode on unbeaten fifties from David Miller (75) and Heinrich Klaasen (74) to post a competitive total of 249/4. In reply, Sanju Samson's impressive half-century (86) went in vain as India fell short by nine runs.

Interestingly, the hosts are playing with a second-string side as Rohit Sharma-led India’s first-team squad has reached Australia ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which starts on October 16.

Furthermore, South Africa have a superior head-to-head record against India in the ODI format, winning 50 of the 88 matches that they have played so far. India have registered 35 victories while three matches have ended with no results.

Going by recent form and team combination, SA will start as slight favourites against IND going into the second ODI in Ranchi.

South Africa will also be desperate to continue their winning momentum in order to secure an automatic qualification spot in the Cricket World Cup Super League table and qualify for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

Having registered five wins and seven defeats, South Africa are currently languishing 11th in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table with 59 points from 14 matches.

After scoring 125 runs in the three T20Is, Miller continued his impressive form as he smashed 75 runs off just 63 balls in the first ODI in Lucknow. Miller, along with Heinrich Klaasen, stitched together a match-winning 139-run stand for the fifth wicket to power his side to 249/4. Miller has already accrued 96 points and will be a great pick at 7.5 credits.

Top tip: Best bowler

In the bowling department, South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada will be the bowler to watch out for. The 27-year-old fast bowler once again troubled the Indian batters in the opening ODI as he picked two wickets for just 36 runs in his eight overs. At 9 credits, Rabada will be a great investment as he will look to add to his fantasy tally of 80 points.

Top tip: Best all-rounder and wicket-keeper

As far as all-rounders are concerned, Shardul Thakur of India will be the preferred choice. Shardul Thakur made an impressive comeback from an injury in Lucknow as he picked two wickets and also scored a 31-ball 33 to make valuable contributions on both fronts. Shardul Thakur has accumulated 108 fantasy points and will be a smart pick at 8.5 credits.

For the wicket-keeper spot, India’s Sanju Samson will be the fantasy recommendation over Quinton de Kock of South Africa. Besides fulfilling his wicket-keeping responsibilities, Sanju Samson hammered 86 runs off just 63 balls and almost pulled off an incredible run-chase. At just 8 credits, the in-form India wicket-keeper batter could be a game-changer in the second ODI of the series.

India cricketer Deepak Hooda set a new world record for the most consecutive wins since international debut in men’s cricket.

Deepak Hooda has now won 17 successive matches across formats since he made his international debut during a One Day International (ODI) against West Indies in 2022.

Interestingly, the Indian cricket team has never lost a match in which Hooda has been part of the playing XI across formats.

Since Hooda’s international debut, the Men in Blue have won all the eight ODIs and nine T20Is that the swashbuckling batter has played so far.

The Haryana-born cricketer achieved the incredible milestone during India’s commanding five-wicket win over hosts Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

Hooda further extended his impressive record to 17-0 after India beat Zimbabwe by 13 runs in the third and final ODI to record a clean sweep.

The Indian middle-order batter surpassed the previous record held by Romania’s Satvik Nadigotla, who registered 15 consecutive victories since his international debut in men’s cricket. Nadigotla made his international debut in a T20I encounter against Turkey in 2019.

South Africa’s David Miller and Shantanu Vashisht of Romania share the third spot for the most consecutive wins across formats after their international debut in men’s cricket.

Miller and Vashisht won 13 matches on the trot after their international debuts. While the Proteas batter made his international debut during a T20I match against West Indies in 2010, Vashisht played his first international cricket match against Austria in a T20I clash in 2019.

Former West Indies cricketer Collis King completes the top five list. The Barbados-born all-rounder was a part of 12 successive wins across formats after his international debut against England in a Test match in 1976.

  1. Despite Gujarat being a new team, they have done so well. What is the winning formula?

David Miller: The team atmosphere has been extremely positive and we are very clear with our plans and roles. Once you have clarity and are backed by the team, you get confidence and that reflects in our performances.

  1. What makes Gujarat different from other franchises for you?

David Miller: Each Indian T20 League team is different and it isn’t easy to compare. They all have different setups. At Gujarat, it was a fresh start for us all and being a part of this journey from the beginning has been exciting.

  1. Your thoughts on Hardik Pandya as captain?

David Miller: Hardik is a confident man and that reflects in his leadership. Both on and off the field, he has the ability to make people feel welcome and relaxed. He knows how to handle pressure and that has been his biggest strength. He has had a great run and I hope we continue to achieve success under his leadership.

  1. Lucknow is also through to the playoffs. What could be the reason behind new teams doing so well?

David Miller: It is difficult to say why the two new teams, in particular, have performed so well. If you look at all the teams, they are all balanced and have got some fantastic players.

  1. 10 years in the Indian T20 League. Is it fair to say you're having your best season this year?

David Miller: As a player, my goal has always been to win matches for the team. This year I am happy to have contributed to the team’s success and in our journey to qualify for the playoffs. It is only the second time I will get a chance to be in the playoffs. For me, that is the biggest thing and we are hoping to go all the way.

  1. You're an Indian T20 League veteran, having played for three teams and over a 100 matches. How has the league evolved over the years?

David Miller: The teams have matured over time, no doubt about it. As the years have gone by, the teams have figured out the formula for success on the field of play. With an eye on success, each team has worked out a process which fits in for them and one that they hope brings success.

  1. You, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan have been exceptional in closing out games this season. Your thoughts?

David Miller: Firstly, it is the belief that we can win. Rahul and I share a good bond, right since the time we played for Rajasthan. That has helped us share a good camaraderie in the middle. We always believe we have a chance to win and play each ball well while focusing on the task ahead. It helps that Rashid has been able to come in and back us up with his boundary-hitting abilities.

  1. Name a young player who has caught your eye this season?

David Miller: The Indian T20 League always unveils new players with potential. I would say Umran Malik caught the eye for me. He got five wickets against us and showed that he has the potential to go the distance. He has raw pace and that is always an asset.

  1. Your 1st home game could be the Indian T20 League 2022 final. Is there any extra motivation?

David Miller: The motivation is always to win but if we get to play the big game in front of the huge crowd at Ahmedabad, it will be extremely special. As a sportsperson, you want the big stage and if we get the opportunity, it will be amazing.

  1. This is an important year considering the T20 World Cup in Australia. What are your thoughts on South Africa's chances?

David Miller: The South African team is a good space. Last year, we won four out of our five matches at the T20 World Cup in the UAE but were unfortunate to get knocked out on net run-rate. I am positive about our chances and confident that we will put our best foot forward.

Hyderabad will lock horns with in-form Gujarat in another fascinating Indian T20 League 2022 encounter at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Monday, April 11.

Led by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, Hyderabad head into the Gujarat clash after securing an eight-wicket win over reigning champions Chennai on Saturday. The 2016 Indian T20 League winners have made a disappointing start to the new season, suffering defeats against Lucknow and Rajasthan in their first two matches. The Hyderabad-based franchise are currently placed eighth in the Indian T20 League 2022 standings with two points from three matches.

Debutants Gujarat, on the other hand, have made an impressive start to their maiden Indian T20 League campaign, winning all of their three matches so far. The Hardik Pandya-led outfit is currently the only unbeaten side in the Indian T20 League 2022, having beaten Punjab, Delhi and Lucknow so far. With six points from three matches, Gujarat are currently placed second in the standings and trail table-toppers Kolkata on net run rate.

Hyderabad and Gujarat will go head-to-head for the first time in the Indian T20 League on Monday.

On that note, let’s have a look at the key player battles that could decide the outcome of the match.

Hyderabad vs Gujarat key player battles

Kane Williamson vs Mohammed Shami

India cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami has troubled New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in the Indian T20 League. The right-arm pacer has dismissed Williamson three times in the high-profile T20 league, while conceding just 29 runs to the Kiwi in five innings.

While Williamson has amassed 1935 runs in 66 Indian T20 League matches at an average of 38.70, Shami has picked 85 wickets in 80 matches at an economy of 8.59. The battle between Williamson and Shami will be a key contest in the upcoming Indian T20 League 2022 clash on Monday.

Nicholas Pooran vs Rashid Khan

While West Indian wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran has been a decent performer with the bat in the Indian T20 League, former Hyderabad leg-spinner Rashid Khan has been nothing short of a revelation with the ball. Pooran has scored 645 runs in 36 Indian T20 League matches at an average of 22.24. On the other hand, Afghanistan spin sensation Rashid has bagged 98 wickets in 79 Indian T20 League matches.

Furthermore, Rashid has had an upper hand against Pooran in the Indian T20 League, giving away just eight runs in four innings that he has bowled to the West Indian. The Afghan has also dismissed Pooran once.

Rashid will be eager to produce another match-winning spell against his former side on Monday.
