Odion Ighalo has said that he is living the dream after his loan move to Manchester United was extended till January 2021 despite the global pandemic.

The Nigeria international, a lifelong United fan, joined the club on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January due to the current situation then prevailing in China.

But the virus then spread to Europe and brought the Premier League season to a halt in mid-March.

It looked then as if the 30-year-old's career with United might amount to just eight games given his original deal was due to expire on May 31.

But ahead of the Premier League season resuming on June 17, United said they had agreed with Shenhua to extend Ighalo's loan move until January.

"I'm really happy. It's a dream for me to be here. I'm buzzing and ready to go," Ighalo told MUTV.

"The last few days have been difficult as there have been different talks about it but now I'm really happy, so I need to concentrate fully. I'm here until the end of January, so it's good for me."

The most recent of Ighalo's four goals for United came in a Europa League match away to LASK, a fixture played behind closed doors as a result of the pandemic measures in Austria.

Fixtures without spectators will become the norm when the Premier League resumes and Ighalo, recalling his experience, said: "It was strange, you know, but it's OK.

"We know there is nothing we can do now but play behind closed doors and we're happy to do it.

"In the game against LASK, it was strange because you could hear everything when your team-mates shouted. In a normal game, you can't hear, but it was clear and loud.

"It's a bit strange without fans, and difficult, but we have to be safe so we have to do it."

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he is confident of having Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford fit should the Premier League season restart next month.

Pogba has missed the majority of the campaign with an ongoing ankle injury, while Rashford seemed set to miss the rest of the season when he suffered a double stress fracture in his back in January.

United returned to training in small groups last week and preparations are expected to be ramped up further for a return to action when Premier League clubs vote on resuming contact training on Wednesday.

"Hopefully now we've proved we can do this safely and we can move to the next step. It's been really enjoyable being on the training ground again," said Solskjaer.

"They (Pogba and Rashford) are looking good, they've joined training now and they've done everything the other boys have been doing. No reaction so far, touch wood.

"When we get started, it looks like we can have a full squad to choose from."

The return of both players could be a major boost to United's hopes of ending the season on a high in three competitions.

Solskjaer's men were three points off the top four in the Premier League when play was halted due to the global pandemic in March.

The Red Devils are also still in the hunt for silverware in the FA Cup and Europa League, which UEFA hopes to complete in August.

However, Solskjaer may have to do without on-loan striker Odion Ighalo. The Nigerian was signed from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in January, but his short-term deal expires at the end of May.

Despite United's interest in extending Ighalo's stay, Shanghai are reportedly keen for him to return to China for the start of their season.

"The loan deal went to the end of May now, so obviously he's supposed to be going back," added Solskjaer.

"We're in dialogue and hopefully (he can stay). They've been great towards us, his club, and allow him to play for his dream club.

"It's been a dream for him and hopefully he can finish off what he started, maybe with a trophy or two. But at the moment nothing's been agreed yet. Their league is going to start soon so we are just waiting to see."

Ighalo scored four goals in three starts and made eight appearances in total for United.

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo has said that he hopes his loan deal at Manchester United is extended until the Premier League season is completed following the coronavirus lockdown.

The 30-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in January and has a contract until May 31.

Premier League bosses hope to resume the season in June but China's Super League is also edging towards the start of their season after it was delayed by COVID-19.

"I would like to finish the season if it's possible," Ighalo told BBC Sport.

"I was in good form, good shape, scoring goals and now we've stopped now for over a month. I've given it my best and hopefully we'll come back to play.

"The team had a good momentum before the pandemic started. At the moment I'm on loan, and this will cut short my time at the club."

United are reportedly keen to extend Ighalo's contract even though their attacking worries have eased during the lockdown. The former Watford player has scored four times in eight games in all competitions for United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are fifth in the table with nine games remaining, chasing a Champions League spot after an indifferent season.

Solskjaer said his players had been wearing GPS trackers as part of their training regime as they prepare for a possible return to action.

"It's not to keep track of them or spy on them but it's been so long now, this phase and at different stages we've added things and I think the GPS has inspired and motivated a few of them just to go that little bit extra," the Norwegian told the BBC's Football Focus programme.

"We hope we're getting closer and closer, we're hoping so anyway and it's time to ramp it up a little bit."

Premier League clubs will meet on Monday to discuss their "Project Restart" plan.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over the Manchester United managerial job, it was clear that a rebuild was the need of the hour. The squad, left behind by Jose Mourinho, was low on confidence, disjointed and needed restructuring.

And Solskjaer, who has overseen two transfer windows now, after being handed the reins on a permanent basis a little over a year ago, has done a solid job so far. True, the season was off to a dodgy start, but Manchester United have recovered admirably and are in contention for a top-four finish, while still being in the hunt for the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League.

Solskjaer’s task is not complete by any stretch of the imagination, but the Norwegian has brought back the positive atmosphere around Old Trafford, with his five new signings playing a crucial part along the way.

But which of Solskjaer’s signing has made the most impact since arriving at the Theatre of Dreams? Lets find out;

Daniel James ?7/10

Arriving from Swansea City for a modest fee of £15 million, there weren’t a lot of expectations on Daniel James, given that he had just played one full season with the senior team. But the manner in which he started life at Manchester United ?with a goal on his debut against Chelsea ?sent the Red Devils?faithful over the moon.

Indeed, James enjoyed a fantastic first month in Manchester United colours, and suddenly the Welshman became a key member of Solskjaer’s side at a time when many expected him to be a squad player at most.

The goals dried up for James soon enough, but he continued to make a difference on the pitch with his relentless running and work-rate off the ball. His goal-drought finally came to an end earlier this month, leaving him with a tally of four goals and seven assists in 37 games till date.

There is plenty to like about James?game ?his searing pace, the willingness to keep on running and the way he shrugs off tackles from opponents and gets back up. The 22-year-old has made a solid impact at Manchester United, but there is still a lot of work to be done on his game, mainly with regard to his decision-making.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka ?8.5/10

There were many who felt that Manchester United had overspent when they splashed £45 million to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace. After all, he had played just one full season with the Eagles?first-team prior to the switch. But boy has he proved everyone wrong!

Wan-Bissaka did not take long to endear himself to the Manchester United supporters with his crunching tackles and solid defending. The 22-year-old has gone onto become one of the best in his position in the Premier League and even earned a call-up to the England national team, but an injury deprived him of a chance to earn an international cap.

Wan-Bissaka, so far this season, has made 34 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United, contributing with two assists. Furthermore, he has made a whopping 99  tackles in the Premier League this seasons, with only Leicester City’s Ricardo Pereira making more (118), although the latter has played over 200 minutes more than Wan-Bissaka.

While there are no doubts over Wan-Bissaka's defensive capabilities, his attacking output does leave a lot to be desired, considering that a modern-day full-back is expected to act as a key attacking outlet for the teams. Wan-Bissaka has shown improvement in that facet of the game as well recently though, reinforcing a belief that Manchester United have a gem on their hands.

Harry Maguire ?8/10

A lot of eyebrows were raised when Manchester United decided to splash a whopping £80 million to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City last summer, in the process, making him the world’s most expensive defender.

While there is still a long way to go for Maguire to repay that outlay completely, he has shown why United were willing to go all out for him. The Englishman has helped the Red Devils?defence improve considerably from where they were last season. His presence on the field has brought a sense of assurance to the backline, while the composure he exudes when on the ball and his strong aerial presence have been particular standouts.

But it is the authority and the leadership qualities that has made Maguire such a hit at Manchester United. From his first game, the England international has taken over the leadership mantle at the club. So, it was hardly surprising that he was appointed the club captain after Ashley Young’s departure in January.

There have been mistakes here and there, while he is also capable of scoring more than the two goals he has scored so far given his aerial strengths. But Maguire, without a doubt, has played a huge role in the club’s revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and has also had a positive impact on fellow defender Victor Lindelof’s game.

Bruno Fernandes ?9/10

If reports are to be believed, Manchester United spent the entire summer trying to sign the Portuguese playmaker, but were unable to close the deal. However, they ensured that a repeat of the same did not happen in January. And what an inspired piece of business this has proved to be for the Red Devils!

It is no secret that Manchester United were lacking the creative element in their game for the entire first half of the season, especially with Paul Pogba out injured. But Bruno Fernandes?arrival has addressed that issue in some style.

Fernandes?effect at Manchester United has been infectious, to say the least. While the Portuguese has contributed heavily with three goals and four assists in just nine matches, it is the impact that he has had on the players around him that makes him such a special signing for United. In his short time at the club, the 25-year-old has struck up a fine partnership with fellow midfielder Fred and star striker Anthony Martial.

It is no surprise that Manchester United have gone on to an 11-game unbeaten run following the Portuguese’s arrival at the club. Fernandes has made a huge difference at United, not only with his football but with also his natural leadership.

Odion Ighalo ?8/10

A signing that was termed bizarre, a transfer that was said to be another knee-jerk decision by Ed Woodward & co ?the January deadline day signing of Odion Ighalo, on loan from Shanghai Shenhua, was ridiculed by pundits and rival fans alike. But it has taken very little time for the Nigerian centre-forward to make those naysayers eat their own words.

Ighalo’s signing was one out of need and necessity, with Marcus Rashford facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. And the former Watford striker, who had left the Premier League for China three years ago, has justified Manchester United and Solskjaer’s decision to take a punt on him.

Ighalo has made such an impact during his short stint at the club that there are already talks about making his transfer a permanent one before next season kicks off. The 30-year-old, a boyhood Manchester United supporter, has scored four goals and set up one more in four starts in all competitions.

Goals and assists aside, Ighalo has also led the line admirably. Holding the ball up effectively, bringing his teammates into play with sharp link-up, the 30-year-old has brought a different flavour to the Manchester United squad ?something that they were lacking.

Odion Ighalo celebrated his first goal in Manchester United colours by dedicating it to his late sister Mary Atole, who sadly passed away on December 12. His goal helped Manchester United lodge a comfortable 5-0 win against Club Brugge in the second leg of the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League.

United, for a majority of duration, played against 10 men after Brugge's Simon Delli was sent off just 22 minutes in the game after he deliberately intervened a shot from Daniel James in the box. January signing Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot and Ighalo eventually made two in no time. Scott McTominay, returning from injury, scored his side's third and a brace from Fred capped off a five-star performance from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

When Ighalo was loaned in by United in the winter transfer window, it was heavily criticised by the fans. Ighalo, 30, was playing in Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, his second club in China after three years in Watford. His neat finish in the 34th minute after some brilliant movement by Bruno Fernandes and Juan Mata was followed by a heart-wrenching celebration when he displayed his sister's image in a shirt he was wearing inside.

Ighalo, the first Nigerian to score for Manchester United, said after the match that Mary was also a fan of Manchester United. "She was a good United fan too. We hoped for this moment but now I’m at United, she’s not here to see what is going on...It’s emotional. I have promised myself that every goal I score, I’ll dedicate it to her. She’s up there watching me", he said as his joy was quickly taken over by a feeling of irreplaceable loss.

Mary's unfortunate demise came after she collapsed in her home in Canada in December. For Ighalo, he has promised to dedicate his goals at Old Trafford in her memory.

In the post-match press conference after the complete domination, coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sang praises of the frontman, and talking about his ability to sniff a goal-scoring situation and characteristic of a true striker, he said;

"You can see he sniffs goals, he wants to be there, where it sometimes hurts. That goal, he was sharp in his head and as that ball is played over to Juan, he spins and was on the six-yard line when Juan puts it there. That’s a natural striker."

Odion Ighalo, a journeyman for most of his career, has finally scored his first goal for the Red Devils, something that he would like to keep adding on. With Anthony Martial out due to a knee injury and Marcus Rashford out with a long-term back injury, the onus will be on Ighalo to stay on target. The return of McTominay has brought added balance to the side and allowed Fernandes and Mata to play more freely, weaving tricks every now and then. Ighalo will try to draw strength from the pain and make his sister proud.

Manchester United’s newest acquisition, Odion Ighalo has revealed that he took a pay-cut to complete his ‘dream move?on deadline day.

Ighalo, who happens to be a lifelong Manchester United fan, completed his deadline day move from the Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua on loan, and said that his mother cried after hearing the news and parties were hosted in the streets where he grew up as a kid.

Speaking to the club’s website, the 30-year-old Nigeria center-forward said,

"At 11pm in Shanghai, my agent called me [to say] that United want to do the deal, so I woke up that night and started looking for a translator to go to the directors' room and hit his door.

"'My agent wants to speak to you, United are coming for me, you have to make this happen'."

“He (agent) said: ‘You’re going to get a pay cut to go to United.?I said: ‘I don’t care. Make this deal happen. I want to go to United. I don’t care how much is the pay cut, I know that, make it happen.’?/p>

He also mentioned that there were interests from other clubs as well, but his heart was set on joining United.

"A few other clubs had shown interest, I said 'please, just pick United, if it's going to be possible'," he said.

"I called my mum and she was happy, crying," he said.

"I know many people used to say when they join a team, they say that they dream of playing for that team. Mine was not the case. I supported the team when I was young.

"People that know me, even back in Nigeria, and even when I was playing at Watford, my team-mates knew that I loved Manchester United, I support them."

The January Transfer window is now done and dusted. While some players and clubs have spent wisely, some others have failed to make the most of the time. Let's take a look at which clubs made it count and which clubs were caught hibernating.

Winners

Inter Milan:

Inter Milan were one of the biggest winners in the transfer window and it was their approach that made them stand apart from others. This year, they have come out of their " Big Club" shell and have gone for quality players for whom they would have to pay less.

The Antonio Conte lead team signed Ashley Young, Victor Moses and Christian Eriksen in this window. Although Conte doesn't want to boast about the business they have done as he said "You in the media seem to act as if we just signed half of Real Madrid, but that’s not the right message," but it is beyond denial that the Nerazzurri have been the clear winners of the January transfer window.

Borussia Dortmund

How are Borussia Dortmund the undisputed winners in the transfer window with only one signing?

Because they have signed Erling Braut Haaland!

How is that a win?

He scored 5 goals in his first 57 minutes of play.

The teenager was the hottest property in Europe and Manchester United were looking the favourites in the chase because Ole was the one who gave him his first senior appearance in Molde. But Dortmund hijacked the deal from the Red Devils.

Keeping in mind that they spent their entire summer reinforcing their midfield with Brandt, Weigl and Thorgan Hazard, getting Haaland for just 20 million was the cherry on the cake. Also on deadline day, they secured the services of seasoned midfielder Emre Can, who was out of favour at Juventus and would look to restart his career in his native Germany.

Manchester United

Given the injury woes that they had with Rashford, McTominay and Paul Pogba on the bench, United needed to strengthen their squad. Signing 25-year-old Portuguese Bruno Fernandes could be a massive upgrade from the likes of Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira in the midfield.

They were also strengthened by a deadline day signing of Odion Ighalo, who lit up the Premier League with Watford a few seasons back. The 31-year-old has been signed on a loan deal for the next six months, and presents a completely non risk option for the Red Devils as they deal with their injury crisis. He’s Premier League proven, but whether he can still deliver for an elite club is to be seen.

Losers

Chelsea:

Frank Lampard has done a commendable job with a limited number of players to his disposal till now but one would've expected Chelsea to sign at least another striker to partner Tammy Abraham.

Olivier Giroud has featured in the team only when Lampard has to choose between him and a defender playing as a centre forward and his lack of efficiency has not helped his cause for the Blues.

Lampard was livid with the situation as he said "I certainly wanted to bring players in. I think I’ve made that pretty clear over the last few weeks and it hasn’t happened."

Adding to their worries, Clinton Mola and Tariq Lamptey, the two highly rated Chelsea teenagers have also left. So, the first transfer window after the ban was lifted was not much of a success for the London club.

RB Salzburg

RB Salzburg have to accept that they are doing great when it comes to grooming players, but when it comes to business, they might feel robbed.

With two young sensations, Takumi Minamino and Erling Braut Haaland, in the team, they could've surely cashed in on them. After Mane and Keita, Minamino also joined Liverpool but for just 7.25 million Euros.

Haaland had scored a staggering 29 goals in 27 games for the Austrian side, including 8 in the Champions League. Therefore, seeing him go for just 20 million Euros was probably a big miss in the business planning of Salzburg.

Barcelona

Life has not been easy for Quique Setien who seems to be happy just to be at Barcelona. But with an injured and clearly ageing Luis Suarez, signing a centre-forward was only logical.

But the Barcelona management seemed least interested in the business. Now they will go into the second half of the season with no one to lead the attack. But with Setien still in awe to have Messi playing for him, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him asking the Argentine to finish every game for him.

Whether Messi can keep on doing what he does for the entire second half of the season is something to be seen, but in any case, the transfer window was nothing but messy for the Catalan giants.

The offices of most European football clubs stayed open way past regular on deadline day of the winter transfer window, with many footballers making last ditch moves all across the continent. The biggest movers this January were Erling Haaland who moved from RB Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund, Yannick Carrasco who moved from China to Atletico Madrid and Emre Can, who got his desired move out of Juventus back to his native Germany.

While a few of these transfers were premeditated and went as per plan, the winter transfer window sprang up a few surprises. Here are five transfer that one couldn’t have seen coming this January.

Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan

With just six months left on his contract, it was no surprise that the Danish playmaker moved out of Tottenham Hotspur, but signing for Inter Milan came as a surprise to many. Still only 27, Eriksen is in the prime of his career and had interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid and many more top clubs if rumours were to be believed. Despite those interests, it was Europa League side Inter Milan who secured his services with a 20m bid. The move is all the more surprising since Eriksen has seldom played in a three-man defensive setup, the one preferred by Inter manager Antonio Conte.

Odion Ighalo to Manchester United

The Nigerian forward was the talk of the town in the Premier League in 2015 when he scored goals week in week out for Watford, forming a stellar partnership with club captain Troy Deeney. A couple of seasons later, his scoring tenacity wasn’t the same anymore and he was shipped off to Chinese Super League. Ighalo would have expected to retire in the oblivion of east Asia, but as fate may have it, he will now be leading the line for his dream club, Manchester United. What was surprising this deadline day transfer is how little was reported on this deal till the final few hours of the transfer window.

Ashley Young to Inter Milan

The 34-year-old winger had six months to go on his Manchester United contract, and Inter Milan swooped in with a 1.5 million offer to sign the Englishman. Manchester United however may end up on the wrong side of this deal as their defenders have been struggling with injuries throughout this season. The left back position in general has been a concern for the Reds, with Luke Shaw struggling with fitness and Brandon Williams unable to make that spot his own. Young was still a regular starter for Manchester United, but despite that he was allowed to leave on a meagre transfer sum, making this one of the surprise moves of the winter.

Danny Rose to Newcastle

The English left-back’s loan move to Newcastle United also raised eyebrows amongst a few, since Spurs haven’t nailed on a replacement. Rose and Ben Davies used to alternate in that left-back role for the London side, but now the responsibility falls solely on the Welshman, which could be daunting considering his team still are playing in three competitions. For Rose however, a move to Newcastle almost guarantees him a starting place and augment his chances of making the cut for the Euros squad for the Three Lions.

Ryan Bennett to Leicester City

This transfer also caught most of the British media off guard, as there was little to no reporting on this prior to a confirmation from the Foxes. The move however raises more questions than answers, as Bennett was a sure starter for Wolverhampton Wanderers, and was crucial to their plans with Willy Boly and Ruben Vinagre still struggling for fitness. Bennett joining Leicester also seems a surprise, with Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu their established first choice defenders, with Wes Morgan still an able deputy for the duo.

Manchester United are in deep distress this season and it doesn’t seem like it is going to end anytime soon. With only a handful days left in the January transfer window, the Red Devils are in the hunt for anything they can call a striker. In the context, 30-year-old former Watford striker Odion Ighalo and Leicester's Islam Slimani (on loan to Monaco) are the latest interests for the club after Bruno Fernandes?saga has reached the stagnant point.

Marcus Rashford, by far the best United player this season, had to offer everything he had in terms of goals, but unfortunately for the team, he has joined the likes of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba on the treatment table and is likely to be out from action for at least six weeks. Sources confirmed that he is suffering from a stress fracture on his back.

The starlet has netted 19 times in 31 appearances before getting injured 5 minutes after being brought on against Burnley. Amidst claims of mishandling of the star performer, the Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said, “He’s not had that injury before, no. He complained a little bit after the last time we played Burnley, he felt it the first time".  The absence of Rashford means that United have only two forwards left in their arsenal, Anthony Martial, the inconsistent Frenchman and Mason Greenwood, a teenager who still remains a raw protege.

Since the confirmation of the job, Solskjaer has been the very epitome of inconsistency. While defensive woes, lack of creativity in the midfield has been haunting Manchester United, the lack of firepower in front of goal is something Solskjaer had his eyes on. With Lukaku leaving, United currently have no centre forward to lead the line of attack.

United seem so desperate for a striker that they have tried to talk to Carlos Tevez, the same Argentine who brandished "R.I.P Sir Alex" after scoring against United for Manchester City. Ighalo, currently playing for Changchun Yatai, looks more viable for United as Slimani might be a rather complicated target for the club.

Currently on loan at Monaco, the Algerian has scored 7 goals in 13 Ligue 1 appearances. Leicester manager Brendon Rodgers reckoned “I think that looks like it’s probably going to be too complicated. There is interest in him, but he is there at Monaco and due to be there for the season. I’m not sure if anything will happen on that or not, but it will just make it a little bit complicated."

With six days left in the transfer window, signing a striker might come off just like it happened with Chelsea when Conte wanted to sign a striker wherein even the likes of Chris Wood and Callum Wilson were touted as potential candidates, but the Italian ended up signing Olivier Giroud. Now it is to be seen whether anyone moves to the Devils' den or if Ole himself unpacks his playing boots and hits the ground in the next match.
