James Anderson has been ruled out of the second Ashes Test, with England uncertain when he will be fit to return from an injured right calf.

England's record wicket-taker broke down after just four overs in the series opener at Edgbaston and did not bowl again as Australia romped to a 251-run victory.

Scans have now confirmed he has no chance of taking part in next week's game at Lord's, with assessment taking place "on an ongoing basis".

After pulling up injured on the first morning in Birmingham, Anderson, 37, was restricted to two batting cameos at number 11.

The veteran had not played competitive cricket for a month leading into the match after injuring the same calf playing for Lancashire.

"The MRI confirmed that Anderson has suffered a calf injury," said a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board on Tuesday.

"As a result of the injury, he will commence a rehabilitation programme working with the England and Lancashire medical teams.

"Anderson will miss the second Test match, which starts at Lord's on Wednesday August 14. He will be reassessed on an ongoing basis."

Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza has promised England another trial by spin, when they meet in the World Cup in Cardiff on Saturday.

Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow's dominance at the top of the order has been a hallmark of England's rise to become the top-ranked team in one-day internationals.

But the fast starts have been checked with South Africa, in the opening match of the tournament, handing the new ball to leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who dismissed Bairstow for a duck.

In England's second match, Pakistan opened their bowling with Shadab Khan and the move paid off, with the leg-spinner dismissing Roy cheaply.

The green pitches in Cardiff allowed New Zealand's arsenal of quicks to skittle Sri Lanka last weekend, while Nuwan Pradeep then did the same to Afghanistan.

As a result, England appear likely to recall Liam Plunkett, perhaps at the expense of leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

But Bangladesh will be sticking to their tried-and-tested formula, relying on the spin of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shakib Al Hasan and Mosaddek Hossain.

"Our spinners all over the world have played a big role, it is one of our biggest strengths," Mortaza told reporters on Friday.  "We know that Shakib is one of the biggest strengths for us. Miraz has been doing well for a long time. I mean, the last two years, he's doing so well for us with the new ball.

"South Africa started with these tactics. So most of the teams will be taking them as well."

Bangladesh beat England at both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

But the 2019 tournament hosts are a different proposition now, boasting a fearsome batting line-up and a strong bowling unit.

And while England lost to Pakistan in their last match, Mortaza knows his side face a tough task.

"This is one of the best teams England have ever produced, especially in the World Cup," he said. I think still they are in the right way winning matches, and they are in good touch.

"We have been beating them the last two World Cups. That doesn't mean that we will make it happen again the way it did."

Jason Roy's 153 took England to 386 for six, the highest total of the World Cup so far, as Bangladesh's attack took a battering in Cardiff on Saturday.

England had conceded 348-8 in a surprise 14-run defeat by Pakistan in Nottingham on Monday.

But the tournament hosts overhauled that score with ease as they topped their previous World Cup best of 338-8 against India at Bangalore in 2011.

Roy's innings also replaced Rohit Sharma's 122 not out for India as the highest individual score of this World Cup to date.

England hit 14 sixes and 28 fours in their innings, with Chris Woakes (18 not out) an Liam Plunkett (27 not out) piling on the agony with an unbroken stand of 45 in just 17 balls.

Bangladesh now need to surpass Ireland's 329-7 against England in Bangalore in 2011 -- the highest score by a team batting second to win a World Cup match -- if they are to achieve an unlikely victory.

England were sent in to bat by Tigers captain Mashrafe Mortaza on a green-tinged pitch but Roy and Jonny Bairstow (51) seized the initiative, sharing a rapid first-wicket stand of 128.

Jos Buttler, who survived an lbw review first ball, then followed up with a dashing 64 featuring four sixes -- including a huge straight hit off Mossadek Hossain that sailed into the River Taff.

Both Roy and Bairstow have come unstuck against slow bowling in this tournament so it was no surprise when left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan opened the bowling.

But on a green-tinged, if slow, pitch, his wicketless 10 overs cost 71 runs.

All of Bangladesh's bowlers suffered as England repeatedly took advantage of two short, straight boundaries and some poor ground-fielding.

Bairstow fell after completing a 48-ball fifty, well caught by Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the covers off Mashrafe to give the Bangladesh skipper his first wicket of this World Cup.

The in-form Roy completed a 92-ball century in bizarre fashion when, not looking, he collided with umpire Joel Wilson as he completed what should have been a single to take him to 97, only for Mohammad Mithun at deep square leg to misfield a ball that went for four.

Wilson received on-field medical attention and was checked for concussion at a subsequent drinks break but was cleared on both occasions.

Roy was finally caught by Mashrafe off Mehidy, holing out after hitting three towering sixes in a row off the spinner, who finished with two for 67.

The Surrey batsman faced 121 balls, hitting 14 fours and five sixes as he fell just short of Andrew Strauss's England World Cup record of 158 against India in Bangalore in 2011.

Jason Roy hit the highest individual score of the World Cup so far as England got their campaign back on track with a 106-run win over Bangladesh in Cardiff on Saturday.

Following a surprise defeat by Pakistan, which followed England's opening 104-run rout of South Africa, captain Eoin Morgan urged the hosts to "stick to what we do well".

Tournament favourites England, whose rise to the top of the one-day international rankings since Bangladesh knocked them out of the 2015 World Cup has been based on aggressive batting, lived up to his words.

Roy's 153 took England to an imposing 386 for six, leaving Bangladesh needing to surpass Ireland's 329-7 against England in 2011, the highest score by any team batting second to win a World Cup match.

Despite Shakib Al Hasan's 121 -- just the third Bangladesh World Cup hundred after Mahmudullah made two in 2015 -- the Tigers were never in the hunt.

On a Sophia Gardens ground where they famously beat Australia in a 2005 ODI, Bangladesh were eventually dismissed for 280 with seven balls to spare.

Their chase got off to a bad start when fast bowler Jofra Archer (3-29) dismissed Soumya Sarkar for two with a ball that clipped the top of the left-hander's off stump.

Archer, whose 10 wicketless overs against Pakistan cost 79 runs, was far more threatening on Saturday as he reached speeds of 95 miles (153 kilometres) per hour.

But Shakib anchored the innings, flicking Archer for six on his way to a 95-ball century that also included nine fours.

Shakib put on 106 with Mushifqur Rahim (44), a partnership that ended when Roy, who dropped a straightforward chance against Pakistan, held a good catch at point.

And 169-3 soon became 170-4 when Mohammad Mithun fell for a duck after edging leg-spinner Adil Rashid to wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow.

The Test gloveman was behind the stumps after Jos Buttler suffered a hip injury during a typically dashing 64.

Shakib, who had hit fifties in a win over South Africa and a loss to New Zealand this World Cup, was eventually yorked by Ben Stokes to leave Bangladesh on the brink of defeat.

Pace bowling all-rounder Stokes followed up to finish with figures of 3-23.

The in-form Roy completed a 92-ball century in bizarre fashion when, not looking, he collided with umpire Joel Wilson as he completed what should have been a single to take him to 97, only for Mithun at deep square leg to misfield a ball for four. Both Roy and Wilson were unhurt.

Roy was finally caught by Mashrafe off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, holing out after hitting three towering sixes in a row off the spinner.

The Surrey batsman faced 121 balls, hitting 14 fours and five sixes as he fell just short of Andrew Strauss's England World Cup record of 158 against India in Bangalore in 20ll.

"There was a bit of change in the game plan. We didn't allow them to get early wickets and we knew we would be able to catch up," said Roy during the break between innings.

The round-robin group stage sees Bangladesh next play Sri Lanka at Bristol on Tuesday, with England facing the West Indies at the Oval on Friday.

Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan was disappointed in his team's bowling performance following the 106-run loss to England at the 2019 ICC World Cup in Cardiff. While he credited the England openers for setting up the mammoth total of 386, the all-rounder pointed at his team's inability to strike at regular intervals as the reason for the loss.

"Yes, disappointed with the results, or the manner we actually bowled. I thought we bowled really, really well against South Africa and against New Zealand. But you know, obviously, England played brilliantly. Credit goes to their batsman. The way their openers started, and the way Buttler finished the innings was, you know, the turning point of the match I think," Shakib said at the post-match media conference on Saturday (June 8).

"That's been their pattern for the last two, three years, by building up to this World Cup. So, they are not changing in this World Cup the way their approach was going for the last two, three years. We knew that it's always going to be tough for us. We knew that we had to take wickets at regular intervals in order to keep the momentum down, which we couldn't do today. I think that's why we lost the match.

"I thought anything between 320 to 330 was something we could have to feel much comfortable. I think we had two wickets down and 30 overs, 180 on the board. From there on, you can think of chasing something like 320, 330, if you keep wickets in hand. But 380 was always against our chase or favour," he added.

Though Bangladesh lost, Shakib's fine run at the World Cup continued as he registered his third successive fifty-plus score, with his latest being a 119-ball 121. This century came after he was promoted to the number 3 position on the batting line-up. "It is different. You need to face some different challenges. But I'm enjoying at this moment," said Shakib about batting at No. 3. "But having said that, you know, just the start, I need to contribute as much as I can with both bat and ball. I thought it's a better opportunity for me, you know, to contribute more with the bat. At this moment, I'm enjoying, but having said that, you know, there are plenty more matches in this tournament and after that."

England posted their highest World Cup total of 386 for six on the way to a comfortable win against Bangladesh in Cardiff to ease the pain of defeat against Pakistan.

It was the host nation's seventh successive score of 300-plus in one-day internationals -- the longest such streak by any team in the format.

England's 100 club

England's batsmen came into the World Cup with a fearsome reputation and they are showing they mean business.

Opener Jason Roy became England's third century-maker of the tournament after Joe Root and Jos Buttler when he reached three figures against Bangladesh.

Pre-World Cup predictions suggested a run-fest in England and Wales but so far fans have witnessed a balanced contest between bat and ball.

The only other century-makers in the World Cup by the time the England-Bangladesh match finished were Shakib Al Hasan, who made a century in Bangladesh's reply, and India's Rohit Sharma.

Roy smashed five sixes and 14 fours in his innings of 153 off just 121 balls, falling just short of Andrew Strauss's record England World Cup score of 158, made against India in 2011.

Buttler and Jonny Bairstow also chipped in with fifties and Liam Plunkett smashed 27 in nine balls in a cameo knock to underline England's strength in depth.

Shakib factor

Image Shakib ?AFP / Paul Ellis

Are Bangladesh too reliant on Shakib Al Hasan?

The 32-year-old talisman is the undoubted star of the team and tops the one-day international all-rounder rankings.

He opened the bowling against England with his slow left-arm orthodox bowling, but went wicketless and proved expensive, going for 71 runs.

It was a different story when he batted, scoring 121 to anchor the innings, but he did not get the support he needed from his teammates.

Bangladesh came into the match on the back of victories against England in both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups but they were quickly in trouble in Cardiff.

Their chances were hindered by a patchy performance in the field, with some shoddy fielding letting them down.

Bangladesh are no pushovers, but do they have the weapons with bat or ball to trouble the best sides, particularly in conditions that do not favour their slower bowlers?

Archer pace

Image Archer ?AFP / Paul Ellis

England's cricket chiefs must be patting themselves on the back after ushering quick bowler Jofra Archer into the fold in time for the World Cup.

The express paceman gives England's attack a different dimension and he again looked dangerous in Cardiff.

Archer bowled opener Soumya Sarkar with a beautiful delivery that clipped the top of off stump and finished his first spell having conceded just 14 runs of his five overs.

Archer returned to the attack to finish with figures of 3-29 in 8.5 overs.

The other top teams at the World Cup -- India and Australia -- also boast potent new-ball attacks and the West Indies pacemen have brought back memories of their glory days.

In a tournament in which the ability to take wickets could prove decisive, England have a vital weapon.

Eoin Morgan says England will not panic as they attempt to get their World Cup campaign back on track against Bangladesh following their chastening defeat against Pakistan.

The hosts started their bid to win their first-ever World Cup with a comprehensive 104-run victory against South Africa before they stumbled in their second game, losing by 14 runs.

Captain Morgan said England would not change their aggressive approach in Saturday's match in Cardiff.

England's tactics have been based on fearless attacking from their powerful batsmen and they are also aggressive as a bowling unit, boasting the pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.

"All we talked about is sticking to what we do well, looking at our strengths," he said in his pre-match press conference in the Welsh capital on Friday.

"Previous to the tournament starting we talked about losing games -- how would we react? What would we counter that with?

"Everything comes back to focusing on ourselves, how we win games of cricket and get the best out of ourselves."

England rotated their attack at Trent Bridge, bringing in Mark Wood for Liam Plunkett.

Conditions are expected to be more seamer-friendly in Wales, meaning Plunkett could return in place of a spinner.

"We'll see another day where the wicket is under covers," Morgan said. "The pitches here have been a bit greener and more seamer-friendly so that's a potential (option), yeah."

Bangladesh, who have beaten England at the past two World Cups, are in a similar position to England, having followed a win over South Africa with a loss to New Zealand

"It is going to be a difficult game, they're a good side. I think people underestimate them but we certainly don't," Morgan said.

"Their senior players especially have played a lot of games, more so than our senior players. They are a threat but hopefully we can play well and overcome it."
