Indian cricket star and legend Padmakar Shivalkar died at the age of 84 on Monday, March 3, 2025. He is known for his exploits in the Ranji Trophy as Bombay’s star player and as India’s finest left-arm spinner the country has produced.

In his professional career, he bagged a total of 589 wickets in 124 first-class matches, of which 361 of those were settled in the Ranji Trophy competitions. He had an average of 19.69 wickets when he was still active.

Sunil Gavaskar, a former teammate, expressed his grief at the loss of a friend.

‘This is very sad news indeed. Within a short time, Mumbai cricket has lost two of its stalwarts, Milind and now Padmakar, who were the architects of many a victory,?he stated in an interview.

‘One of my regrets as India captain is not being able to convince the national selectors to include ‘Paddy?in the Test team. He deserved the India cap far more than some others who got it. That’s fate,?he also added.

The Mumbai Cricket Association has also expressed their thoughts in an X (formerly Twitter) post on their official profile, sending condolences to the star’s family that was left behind.

Shivalkar’s career: From start to finish

Ever since he was a young kid, Padmakar has shown a love for the sport and has participated in a lot of local cricket circuits in Mumbai. He was spotted and honed by Vinoo Mankad and trained at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana. His first debut as a professional cricket player was back in April 1962 when he was picked in the Cricket Club of India President's XI which would compete against an International XI that was on a world tour.

In that game, he competed against players such as Bob Simpson, Tom Graveney, Colin Cowdrey, Everton Weekes, Richie Benaud, and Sonny Ramadhin. Shivalkar took a 5 for 129 and a 2 for 44 in a game that ended in a draw. This debut game proved that Shivalkar is on a worldwide level of skill. He then became a member of the Bombay cricket team.

In his professional cricket career, Shivalkar was featured in 10 Bombay victories in the Ranji Trophy. They took the campaigns from seasons 1965-66 to 1976-77. Eventually, they lost the streak, but once the team got back on its feet and reclaimed the title in 1980-81, he was part of the winning team.

For his final game, he made a comeback in the 1987?8 Ranji Trophy season. Being in his late 40s, he still made significant plays. His age then caught up to him, and he then retired from playing professionally.

After retiring, Shivalkar lived peacefully with his wife and two kids.

Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is ruled out for the Ranji Trophy semi-finals in Nagpur. The right ankle injury was sustained last Saturday, February 15 as he was training for the semi-finals.

Mumbai’s preparation against Vidarbha for the February 16 match will include some changes but the team has not named a replacement for the injured batter yet.

Jaiswal recently debuted in his first ODI during their game against England in Nagpur. He scored 15 runs in the same match.

On January 23, Jaiswal also played in the Ranji Trophy match of Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir. The batter made 26 runs out of 51 balls in the second innings but despite efforts, the team lost the game. Jammu and Kashmir won by 5 wickets.

Mumbai remains strong as the team named Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur as some of their top players who can keep the game balanced.

The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign will commence on October 11 and will run till March 2, 2025.

Organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the 90th edition of Ranji Trophy - the premier domestic first-class competition in India - will feature 38 teams that will vie for the title over the course of 135 matches.

The first-round matches will be played between October 11 and October 14. The Ranji Trophy is split into two divisions - Elite and Plate- with 32 teams in the Elite category and six teams in the Plate League.

The teams in the Elite category have been divided into four groups, comprising eight teams each.

All the group stage matches will be held over four days with the knockouts extending to five days. However, the Plate League will only have four-day matches, including the final.

Ranji Trophy 2024-25 teams and groups

Elite Group A: Baroda, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mumbai, Odisha, Services and Tripura

Elite Group B: Andhra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Vidarbha

Elite Group C: Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh

Elite Group D: Assam, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Railways, Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu

Plate: Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim

The Elite division will have four groups with eight teams in each of them. Each team will play a game against every opponent in the same group in a single round-robin format with a total of four home and three away matches.

The top two teams from each Elite Group will proceed to play the quarter-finals with the eventual winners moving onto the semi-finals and final subsequently.

Meanwhile, the Plate Division will be a single group affair with each team playing once against the other five opponents. The top two teams will meet in the final of the Plate League and also gain promotion to next year’s Elite League.

Two teams with the least points out of the four bottom-placed teams in the Elite Group will get relegated to the Plate League next season.

The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 will be conducted over an extended period with both the white-ball domestic tournaments being scheduled in between. Hence the final of the Ranji Trophy is scheduled to happen from February 26 to March 2, 2025.

Mumbai are the defending champions of the Ranji Trophy, winning their 42nd domestic title last year by beating Vidarbha in the final by 169 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in March 2024.

Mumbai will start their Ranji Trophy campaign this year on a victorious note after getting the better of Rest of India in the Irani Cup 2024 earlier this month.

Ranji Trophy is India’s domestic first-class cricket competition which is played between multiple states as well as regional associations. The competition is named after the first Indian cricketer to play international cricket, Colonel H. H. Shri Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II, Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, often known as Ranji or K. S. Ranjitsinhji.

The inaugural edition of the Ranji Trophy was played in the 1934-35 season with Mumbai (Bombay) emerging as the first-ever champions.

Over the years, the tournament has observed several changes in the format. Until 2001, the teams were categorized into five different zones, namely,  North, West, East, South and Central. The central zone was added ahead of the 1952-53 season.

Before the 2002-03 season, the zonal system was replaced by a two-division structure involving the Elite Group and the Plate Group. The Elite Group consisted of as many as 15 teams while the rest of the teams were in the Plate Group.

The competition has further seen many subtle changes to its format since the 2002-03 season. At present, the tournament follows a round-robin format and the teams that qualify go on to compete in the knockout rounds. Teams from all 28 Indian states compete in the tournament along with four of the eight union territories that have at least one representative.

As of the 2021-22 season, a total of 38 teams are divided into eight Elite Groups and one Plate Group. Each Elite Group will have four teams while the Plate Group consists of six teams.

Historically, Mumbai have dominated the Ranji Trophy, winning the competition a record 42 times. None of the other teams have managed to win the title on more than 10 occasions. Furthermore, Mumbai also hold the record for most appearances (47) in the Ranji Trophy final.

The record champions were on a dominant run from the 1953-54 season to the 1972-73 campaign, lifting the title on 18 out of 20 occasions. During this time, only Madras and Baroda could halt Mumbai’s winning run.

After Mumbai, Karnataka have won the most Ranji Trophies (8) followed by Delhi (7) and Baroda (5).

Mumbai are the reigning champions of the Ranji Trophy, having defeated Vidarbha by 169 runs in the 2023-24 final to claim their 42nd title.

The Ranji Trophy, named after Ranjitsinhji, the former Indian cricketer, is an Indian First Class cricket competition. Played first in the 1934/35 season, the tournament has produced some great players and showcased top performances.

Courtesy of excellent bowling performances, the Ranji Trophy has occasionally seen low scores, where bowlers have made the most of their upper hand.

There have been 14 team scores of 30 or fewer in Ranji Trophy history. Three of them belong to Jammu and Kashmir, the most by any team in this tournament. Interestingly, two of J&K’s totals were against Delhi.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad have registered the lowest team total in Ranji Trophy history after being wrapped for 21 by Rajasthan in the 2010/11 season. Deepak Chahar, the Indian pacer, picked up eight wickets, while Pankaj Singh got the other two.

In the inaugural edition, Southern Punjab got bowled out for 22 against Northern India. It held the lowest score record in the Ranji Trophy for 76 years. Baqa Jilani’s five-wicket haul headlined Northern India’s bowling performance in a 91-run victory.

Sind, in 1938/39, and Jammu Kashmir, twice (1960/61 and 1977/78), were bundled out for 23, the joint-third lowest score in the Ranji Trophy history. The J&K team’s other lowest score of the 1960/61 season, 28, completes the top 10.

Saurashtra and Hyderabad are the only two teams in the list of lowest team totals to have won the Ranji Trophy. Saurashtra achieved the feat in 2019/20, while Hyderabad did it in 1937/38 and 1986/87.

The Ranji Trophy is one of the oldest domestic cricket competitions in India. The First Class championship is played between teams representing regional and state cricket associations.

The tournament is named after Ranjitsinhji, the first Indian player to play international cricket. Currently, 38 teams feature in the Ranji Trophy.

Over the years, many Ranji Trophy records have tumbled, considering the batting-friendly nature of the pitches in India. While some teams have had more success than others, there has been no shortage of massive team totals in the Ranji Trophy.

Hyderabad hold the record for the highest team total in the Ranji Trophy after smashing 994/6d against Andhra in the 1993/94 season. Maruti Sridhar scored 366 runs off 523 balls, while Vivek Jaisimha and Noel Arthur David also smashed double-hundreds for Hyderabad. The match ended drawn.

Meanwhile, Holkar, the Indore-based team, amassed 912/8d in the 1945/46 Ranji Trophy semi-final against Mysore after winning the toss and batting first. Six batters crossed the three-figure mark as Holkar batted for 214.5 overs. The exploits earned them a win by an innings and 213 runs.

Tamil Nadu are another team to have scored more than 900 runs in an innings in the Ranji Trophy. Woorkeri Venkat Raman and Arjan Kripal Singh scored triple-hundreds as the visitors piled on 912/6d against Goa in the 1988/89 season. However, Goa held on to a draw in the three-day encounter.

The latest entry is Jharkhand in the 2021/22 season. Courtesy of Kumar Kushagra’s 266, they smashed 880 against Nagaland in the pre-quarterfinals. Jharkhand also amassed a 1008-run lead in that match after the second innings, the highest in First Class cricket history.

Bombay, Maharashtra, Meghalaya and Karnataka are the other teams in the top 10 highest team totals in Ranji Trophy history.

India has produced some outstanding bowlers since the beginning of its cricketing journey and Ranji Trophy has been the platform where this top talent has developed.

Some of these bowlers have shown exceptional skills and dominated at the highest level.

Rajinder Goel has taken the most wickets in Ranji Trophy history, picking 637 wickets. Only 11 bowlers have scalped more than 400 wickets in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Sunil Joshi and R Vinay Kumar are the only bowlers in Ranji Trophy history to have played in the 21st century. Hailing from Karnataka, they both make the top five.

Bishan Singh Bedi, the former Indian captain, completes the top 10, courtesy of his exploits with Delhi.

Joshi achieved the double of 500 runs and 50 wickets in the 1995-96 season of the Ranji Trophy. He was also handy with the bat, scoring 5,129 runs in First Class cricket.

Along with R Vinay Kumar, Sunil Joshi is the only cricketer in the top 10 of this list to feature in the T20 format for Karnataka.

It is the 1998-99 Ranji Trophy final. Chandrakant Pandit, the captain of Madhya Pradesh, had Karnataka under control for the majority of the match. Heartbreakingly, Vijay Bharadwaj, who had six for 24, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

When Madhya Pradesh was 2/1 in the pursuit of a modest objective of 108 in the 2021-22 final, Pandit, as coach, must have had comparable anxieties. But no one in the Mumbai ranks could pull a Bharadwaj, and Madhya Pradesh, under the leadership of Aditya Shrivastava, were unstoppable, taking home the trophy for the first time in their history.

After Mumbai were all out for 269 in their second innings on day five, Sharma and Patidar helped them chase down 108 in 29.5 overs to make Sunday an unforgettable day for Madhya Pradesh. The historic victory was forged by centuries from Yash Dubey, Shubham Sharma, and Rajat Patidar in the first innings.

Chandrakant Pandit’s Ranji Trophy achievements

Pandit has been switching teams all around India for the past 23 years. During his coaching lifetime, he not only helped Mumbai win the Ranji Trophy three times (2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, and then again in 2015-16 after a 10-year break), but he also changed Assam's culture towards the game. But Pandit didn't start receiving the credit he deserved until Vidarbha won consecutive titles (2017?8 and 18?9 seasons). In domestic cricket, Vidarbha was seen as an underdog team, therefore frequently making it to the elite group was seen as a significant accomplishment.

When asked about his leadership and strategic choices, MP captain Aditya Shrivastava didn't hold back when he grabbed the trophy. Shrivastava publicly and eloquently lauded the 60-year-old coach, claiming that he had never managed a cricket team at such a high level and that all he had done was largely the result of the preparations made by Pandit and his support crew. Similar comments were expressed by Faiz Fazal, the only captain from Vidarbha to have won the Ranji twice.

As a result of Pandit's influence over the group, when Srivastava planned to be married, he asked this Pandit—rather than the Pandit who may officiate the ceremony—what date he might reserve. He was only given two days off from training even then.

Chandrakant Pandit is continuing the legacy of those who trained him, including Ramakant Achrekar, Ashok Mankad, and Polly Umrigar, all of whom came from the Bombay school.

“It’s a great memory which I left 23 years back on this ground. I think it’s all God’s blessings that we come back here and win this trophy which was fabulous,?the legendary head coach told Star Sports.

“It’s a bit emotional because missing out on this trophy when I was the captain of Madhya Pradesh on this very ground. Some say ‘father couldn’t do it but the son does it? so Aditya Shrivastava has done it tremendously,?he added.

“I always look for challenging jobs when the team isn’t doing very well. There are a lot of youngsters in the team and I probably want to develop that culture for a particular state. Particularly about MP, I played for this team for almost six years. I knew the culture so didn’t turn down the offer that came to me in March.?/span>
