The SuperSport Park is one of the iconic cricket stadiums located in Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa.

Originally named as Centurion Park, the SuperSport Park has a seating capacity of 22,000 and also features Beach Cabana type hospitality chalets on the grass banks. It has a beautiful outfield with one of the best drainage facilities.

Considered to be one of the cricket grounds with the best players' facilities in the world, the SuperSport Park staged its first One-Day International (ODI) between hosts South Africa and India in December 1992. India won the match by four wickets.

The SuperSport Park later hosted its first Test match played between South Africa and England in November 1995. The match ended in a draw.

Later in 2009, it staged its first T20 international match that featured hosts South Africa and Australia. Under the leadership of Johan Botha, South Africa won the game by 17 runs.

The SuperSport Park is the home ground of the South African cricket team, Titans cricket team and SA20’s Pretoria Capitals.

It was also one of the venues that hosted ICC World Cup 2003 and ICC Champions Trophy 2009. It also staged the Indian T20 League in 2009.

Let’s have a look at SuperSport Park T20 records and stats:

Former Zimbabwe cricketers Murray Goodwin and Grant Flower hold the record for the highest partnership at the Riverside Ground in ODI cricket. During a NatWest Series encounter in July 2000, Murray Goodwin and Grant Flower stitched an unbeaten 186-run stand for the fifth wicket to help Zimbabwe chase down West Indies?287/5 in 49.1 overs. South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen owns the record for the best batting average in ODI cricket.

The talismanic batter has maintained a batting of 74.95 in ODIs while aggregating 1,499 runs in 30 innings. In the process, van der Dussen has hit three centuries and 11 fifties.

In fact, Rassie van der Dussen is the only ODI batter to register a batting average over 70. Following a career-best score of 134 in 117 balls against England in July 2022, the Proteas star took his average within touching distance of 75.

Rassie van der Dussen’s batting average of 74.95 in 36 ODI matches is significantly greater than Ryan ten Doeschate, who is second on the list at 67.00.

The now-retired Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate is arguably one of the greatest players to have played cricket from an Associate nation, as he amassed 1,541 runs in 33 ODI matches.

The South Africa-born all-rounder batted in all but one of his 50-over matches for the Netherlands, with the 2007 ODI match against Scotland washed out and his team not getting a chance to bat.

Ryan ten Doeschate’s best performance with the bat came against England during the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He slammed a 110-ball 119 as the Netherlands were chasing a target of 297. His knock, however, ended in a losing cause as the Three Lions won the fixture by six wickets.

Ten Doeschate retired in 2021 as the Netherlands?leading run-getter in ODIs, with five centuries and nine fifties. He is the only non-active player on the top five list for best batting average in ODI cricket.

Babar Azam, the current top-ranked batter on the ICC Men’s ODI rankings, is the third batter with the best batting average in ODI cricket.

The Pakistan captain has amassed 4,442 runs in 89 matches while registering a batting average of 59.22 and a strike rate of 90.24.

Azam is one of the finest batters Pakistan has ever had, and he continues to climb up the run charts. His highest individual ODI knock was 158 off 139 deliveries against England in 2021.

Former India captain Virat Kohli is next on the list. He is currently the highest-active ODI run-scorer with 12,344 runs in 262 games, and has registered a batting average of 57.68.

Kohli is among the greatest modern-day stalwarts across all forms of cricket. But in ODI cricket alone, the top-order batter is seen as someone who could break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds, given he has scored 43 centuries in 50-overs cricket.

Faf Du Plessis retired as captain of South Africa from Test and T20Is in February 2020, just before the global pandemic gripped the world and brought the sport to a standstill. After a great start to his time as the Proteas skipper, the last year wasn’t as fruitful for the 35-year-old.

During the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, South Africa were knocked out of the semi-finals contention quite early in the tournament, after having managed just a single win from their first seven games.

Du Plessis soon called his time as skipper, with Quinton De Kock appointed as captain across the white-ball formats effective immediately. The wicket-keeper has grown into his new role quite comfortably, starring for his side against World Champions England in their first ODI series since they won the World Cup. He hit 107 as the hosts chased down England's 258-8 with 14 balls left. Following his debut against England as a white-ball captain, De Kock secured a 3-0 ODI series victory over visitors Australia in the subsequent series.

While the future of the Proteas seems set to continue under the helm of Quinton De Kock for the shorter formats, Cricket South Africa (CSA) is yet to decide on a captain for the longest format.

With former Test skipper and Proteas legend Graeme Smith now acting as the new director of the CSA, the board is expected to announce their decision as soon as world cricket is deemed fit to resume. Smith recently confirmed that Quinton De Kock will not be the Test captain, while not stating any clear candidates for the job as well.

Read | David Warner or Quinton de Kock - Who is the better T20I opener?

With South Africa not scheduled to play any Test before touring West Indies in July and August, they have some time to decide who will lead them in the red-ball format.

And thus, the question that remains is; ?/span>Who will lead the Test side now??/strong>

Graeme Smith himself was a gamble when he was made their Test captain at the ripe age of 22. He had played just eight Tests when he took over from Shaun Pollock but was one of the most prolific Test captains that the modern game has seen, leading the Proteas for 109 Tests for over 11 years, winning 53 of those matches. Under his leadership, South Africa soared to the pinnacle of the longest format of the game. He scored a record 15 Test hundreds as a captain. Another astounding record is that South Africa never lost a Test when Smith scored a hundred.

Many of their top players have recently announced their retirement, including Vernon Philander, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn (from red-ball cricket), Imran Tahir (from ODIs) and JP Duminy which has seen the Proteas losing a substantial part of their leadership core. During the summer of 2019-20 season, South Africa fielded almost 33 players across all formats, giving debuts to nine players in Test cricket. Of these, those who impressed were; Rassie Van Der Dussen and Anrich Nortje.

And Van Der Dussen’s name came up as a potential Test captain after seeing his ability to handle pressure while maintaining a relatively consistent run rate.

At the 2019 World Cup, Rassie Van Der Dussen was South Africa's second-highest run-scorer behind du Plessis, and fourth-highest in the Test season after de Kock, Dean Elgar and du Plessis.

"The challenge for when we do play some cricket is to see who escalates themselves into really consistent performances and who steps up. Coming from a person who a risk was taken on, it is something we would consider," Smith said when asked about the South African Test captaincy.

These words rightly sum up the aforementioned option for the Proteas, as he has just four Test caps to his name and a solitary First-Class captaincy experience. Van Der Dussen is also a respected figure in the dressing room and oozes a sense of confidence, all attributes of being a perfect Test skipper.

Taking a calculated risk in this aspect is not a new phenomenon for the Proteas, who also have the likes of Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram in the setup. While Bavuma has the experience of captaining the Lions franchise - who have won the First-Class title for the past two seasons - he was recently dropped from the Test side, before being recalled for the England Tests after a career-best 180. He, however, was unable to replicate the same form.

Meanwhile, Markram led South Africa to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2014, which is the only African nation’s second title in professional cricket till date. He was touted as the future senior men's team skipper but spent the majority of last summer on the sidelines with a fractured finger, incurred during the first Test against England at Centurion in December.

His return was more than meritorious, scoring two centuries in six domestic limited-overs matches and was in line to return to the Test squad before the suspension of the competition. However, no centuries in his last 38 completed innings for South Africa, regardless of format, makes him a less probable option for Test captaincy.

Among the aforementioned players, Markram is undoubtedly more talented than any of the other candidates, despite having had 30 fewer innings than Bavuma. His prowess at opening the batting in all his trips to the Test crease has helped scored three more centuries. However, Bavuma has made 421 more runs than Markram even though he has been shuffled up and down the order, having played in five different places in the top seven, including as an opener.

Another name in the bag is a seasoned First-Class skipper, Dean Elgar. He has 50 games as captain to his name, including nine at the helm of South Africa’s A team. He was also in charge at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup. Elgar is among the more experienced players of the lot, having represented the Proteas in 63 Tests, with an average of 38.49. He, in fact, has been a part of South Africa’s Test setup since November 2012, while Smith was still captain.

One more player who has willingly put his name into the mix is Keshav Maharaj, with the spinner putting himself into contention despite not being among the board’s initial candidates. "I really want to captain the Proteas. It's been my dream. Not many people know that, but those close to me know that I do want to captain the South African team across all three formats," Maharaj said.

While Maharaj's goals are ambitious, he has previous experience which might work in his favour. Maharaj led the Dolphins, in last season's one-day cup, where they were declared winners after the competition was suspended because of the global pandemic.

The Dolphins finished on top of the point tally with seven victories from 10 matches. Maharaj was their leading wicket-taker and fourth-highest overall. Batting wise, he hasn’t really been as prolific, but finished with the second-highest average for the Dolphins, scoring his maiden List-A half-century, which helped his team to a match-winning total in a low-scoring game against the Cobras.

The South African cricketing board has not set a deadline for the announcement of their new Test captain, but with cricket unlikely to resume for the next several months, they are in no hurry to hand out the armband, with Smith bringing his calm persona into his decision making for the CSA.

The new Proteas skipper will need to lead his team at the top, keeping in mind the many limitations to the team due to quota policies. With South Africa having underperformed massively at the World Cup and placed seventh in the ICC World Test Championship, the new skipper will need to be someone who can lead from the front, and who better than one of their greatest legends in Graeme Smith to choose the future skipper of South Africa’s Test team.

South African cricket is undergoing a renaissance with their Test skipper Faf du Plessis giving up captaincy and Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith, stating that Quinton de Kock will not be given the duties like in limited-overs cricket because of workload concerns. This leaves a rather inexperienced Proteas side with very few options on the captaincy front.

Read | Du Plessis quit as captain after one of his career's 'toughest' seasons

With that in mind, we look at four possible leaders for the Proteas in red ball cricket.

Dean Elgar

Having experience in leading the side before, Dean Elgar is South Africa's most glaring choice on the captaincy front. A gritty opener with natural leadership qualities, Elgar is probably as close to Graeme Smith, a successful Test captain, as it comes, and the Proteas might not think twice before handing him the job.

However, what could work against Elgar is his age and current form. More of a blip for the last couple of years, South Africa will want someone with more future in the role now that they are rebuilding.

Temba Bavuma

The incumbent ODI vice-captain, Temba Bavuma's career has been marred in controversy several times. The fact that he comes from a black background means his name would almost always be coupled with the ‘quota?tag despite him justifying his position as a player.

A flamboyant batsman and a natural leader, Bavuma is a fine choice on the captaincy front but it is likely that the Proteas could face some backlash if that were to happen. Given that Bavuma isn't in the best of form either, this could also be a risky choice.

Rassie van der Dussen

At 32 years old, Rassie van der Dussen ought to be more experienced at the international level. Yet, he is only one series old in the format but could well be in line for a huge promotion on the job front.

Read | Four best Test knocks in the 2010s

Van der Dussen has played just four Test matches and moving him up to captain the side could be a big risk. But Graeme Smith himself took over without much captaincy and international experience and it turned out to be a brilliant decision for Proteas cricket.

Smith hinted at being open to taking a calculated risk on the captaincy matter in Test cricket and van der Dussen could fit the bill perfectly. His age isn't ideal but then again, with few options before them, the Proteas might be willing to compromise on that front.

Aiden Markram

Once hurried into the leadership role in limited-overs cricket, Aiden Markram struggled and lost form. His Test exploits have been brilliant so far and his talent is there for everyone to see. But he remains a home player primarily and his record against spinners and in Asia makes him really vulnerable to take on additional captaincy duties.

Markram perhaps needs to focus on his batting to truly realise his potential. South Africa need Markram to be their big batter across all formats in the next decade and burdening him with captaincy now could turn out to be a double-edged sword. They might ponder taking the plunge but it sure comes with dire consequences.

The Indian T20 League auction presents a stiff challenge for franchises this time with a limited budget and too many holes to plug. As such, a few underrated, like James Neesham, and value-for-money buys, like Kusal Perera could be in the offing.

Here we look at five such players who could be on the radar of franchises:

James Neesham

T20s - 112, Runs - 1531, SR - 137.8, Wickets - 106

James Neesham has turned a new leaf in 2019 and is one of the most underrated lower-order finishers in limited-overs cricket. A stupendous World Cup saw him score a gritty 97* against Pakistan followed by an enthralling show in the finals where he picked three wickets and hit 13 in 5 balls, including a six off Jofra Archer in the Super Over. Given his utility with the ball too, Neesham could be a good pick for a number of franchises.

Rassie van der Dussen

T20s - 108, Runs - 3283, Avg - 37.3, SR - 130.58, 100s - 3

The find of the year for South Africa, 30-year old Rassie van der Dussen is a dependable batsman who can switch between attack and defense in the blink of an eye. The middle-order batsman had a stupendous season with the Jozi Stars in the inaugural Mzansi Super League in South Africa and then went on to record some impressive performances with South Africa in the World Cup. He could be an ideal pick this season given his form.

Kusal Perera

T20s - 96, Runs - 2127, Avg - 23.89, SR - 131.94, 50s - 18

A blockbuster hitter at the top of the order, Kusal Perera packs a punch in the powerplay overs and has often flown under the radar. 2019 saw him make a terrific Test ton in a run chase in Durban in South Africa and he has also shown that his natural game can disturb a lot of teams. Franchises might well be eyeing his belligerence at the top of the order.

Andile Phehlukwayo

T20s - 83, Wickets - 71, Eco - 8.3, Bat SR - 116.47

A good death overs bowler with a bag of tricks, Andile Phehlukwayo can bowl cutters, slower variations and yorkers and is an asset for any side. Phehlukwayo is also a handy lower-order batsman and has often rescued South Africa from tricky positions with his temperament down the order. He hasn't garnered much interest before in the league but could be in for a gig this time.

Mitchell Marsh

T20s - 74, Wickets - 43, Runs - 1487, Bat SR - 120.6

There is a distinct shortage of pace bowling all-rounders in the league this season with Carlos Brathwaite, Chris Morris, Colin de Grandhomme etc. losing contracts. Mitchell Marsh isn't new to the Indian T20 League and with his recent injury history, might seem an overrated player. That said, he has a pretty good record in the format and in franchise cricket and could be in for a surprise deal given what teams are eyeing this season.

South Africa’s vice-captain Rassie van der Dussen says that his team came to India to compete in the “traditional South African way?despite the fact that they have a young and inexperienced side as compared to the previous South African teams that gave India a tough competition.

India and South Africa played their second T20I at Mohali after the first one was washed out due to wet outfield at Dharamsala without a ball being bowled. India won the match by seven wickets as skipper Virat Kohli hit 72 runs off 52 balls.

“We have got a young squad now, but we came here to compete in the traditional South African way, try hard, play hard,?Dussen told the reporters.

“We have got young guys in the squad and we are not going to stand back for anyone. That’s the emphasis, results go your way or not, that’s sometimes you are not sure what’s going to happen. We knew its going to be tough, India is one of the strongest team in the world, and we know we are embracing their challenge,?he added.

"Virat and Rohit are the two leading run-scorers at the moment in T20Is. It’s a great challenge for young bowlers coming here to bowl to those type of guys. We know what challenge is all about, there is a lot of challenges coming to India, and we are honest to ourselves and saying that if we are going to win, we have to be at our best to nullify these types of players.?/p>

"We got Rohit early other night, Shikhar played well, though again, we didn’t have a score to put pressure on him and Virat, and the partnership was massive. Come the match, we can play to execute our plans and get in the situation so that we can put those guys under pressure," he said showing some confidence before the final match.

The third and final T20I of the series will be played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 22nd September.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis led from the front with a century and Rassie van der Dussen made a superb 95 as the Proteas piled up 325-6 against Australia in the World Cup's concluding group match on Saturday.

Reigning champions Australia, already through to the semi-finals, need to win to be certain of finishing top of the 10-team table.

That would ensure they return to Old Trafford for a semi-final clash with fourth-placed New Zealand ?a team they thrashed by 86 runs at Lord's last week.

But defeat could leave Australia with a seemingly tougher last-four showdown against resurgent hosts England at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Mitchell Starc equalled Australia legend Glenn McGrath's record of most wickets at a World Cup tournament, set at the 2007 event in the Caribbean, when he moved to 26 wickets at this edition with a return of 2-59.

But Australia still faced a huge chase, with the highest total made batting second to win a World Cup match the 329-7 posted by Ireland against England at Bangalore in 2011.

South Africa's chances of going through to the knockout phase had long evaporated before this match, with the Proteas having won just two of their previous eight games.

But that did not stop du Plessis, who won the toss, and van der Dussen putting on 151 for the third wicket in front of a sun-drenched crowd.

It might have been a different story, however, had Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey not missed a chance to stump van der Dussen off spinner Glenn Maxwell when the batsman had made just four.

Aiden Markram, only opening after Hashim Amla was ruled out with a knee injury playing football in a warm-up on Friday, set the tone for South Africa with two well-timed boundaries.

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon struck twice to have Markram stumped for 33 and fellow opener Quinton de Kock caught at short third man for 52.

But du Plessis completed his third successive fifty and fourth of the tournament before he advanced down to drive fast bowler Pat Cummins for a superb six.

He then posted the first hundred by a South African at this World Cup when he drove Jason Behrendorff for a single to reach the landmark in 93 balls, with seven fours and two sixes.

But he was out to the next ball he faced, slicing Behrendorff to third man.

Van der Dussen should have been run out for 77 but Steve Smith missed with a wild shy when he had time to underarm the ball.

Van der Dussen then just fell short of his maiden ODI hundred when, trying to hit the last ball of the innings for six, he holed out to Maxwell off Cummins.

He faced 97 balls including four fours and four sixes, with the 30-year-old now boasting an impressive ODI average of 73.77 from 14 innings.

Rassie van der Dussen gave South Africa something to bowl at as the Proteas struggled to 241 for six against tight bowling from New Zealand while battling for a win they need to keep their fading World Cup hopes alive.

After a soggy outfield delayed Wednesday's start at Edgbaston and reduced the match to 49 overs per side, Black Caps captain Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to field, hoping to take advantage of bowler-friendly conditions.

Hashim Amla made a sluggish 55 off 83 bals but Van der Dussen's 67 not out came at better than a run-a-ball.

"It's a bit of a sticky wicket, there has been a lot of rain around here in the last two weeks," said Van der Dussen during the innings break.

"We need to make 241 enough. We know it's not a 300 wicket. If you get 250-260 then you can defend that and that's what we set out to do.

"Our backs are against the wall so we have to come through," he added after New Zealand's bowlers kept the scoring rate to below five an over.

New Zealand, the 2015 losing finalists, were on top early when Trent Boult demolished Quinton de Kock's stumps, sending him back to the pavilion for just five.

Amla and skipper Faf du Plessis helped the Proteas recover to 59-1 in the 14th over.

But Lockie Ferguson then produced an impressive yorker to bowl Du Plessis for 23 immediately after a testing bouncer.

Amla and Aiden Markram put on 52 for the third wicket before veteran opener Amla was bowled by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner.

During his innings, Amla became the fourth South African player to reach 8,000 runs in one-day internationals.

He is the second-fastest player (176 innings) from any side to reach the milestone after India's Virat Kohli (175 innings).

Markram was caught by Colin Munro off Colin de Grandhomme for 38 and David Miller went for 36 before a late flourish from Van der Dussen gave the scoreboard a look of respectability.

South Africa, who brought in fast bowler Lungi Ngidi for Beuran Hendricks, must win this match if they are to stand a realistic chance of reaching the semi-finals after finally recording their first victory of the tournament, against minnows Afghanistan on Saturday.

Despite that nine-wicket win, Du Plessis's side are still languishing in eighth spot in the 10-team table after five games, with the top four qualifying for next month's semis.

After Wednesday's game, they will face Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia.

New Zealand are flying high and a fourth win would lift them to the top of the table ahead of matches against West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and hosts England.
