A Pollard-Pandya show in the closing stage of Mumbai's innings brought the defending champions back to the winning ways, as they defeated Punjab by 48 runs - their biggest victory margin over Punjab (by runs) - to return to the top of the Indian T20 League standings, temporarily enough.

Mumbai, who were coming on the back of a defeat, put on a dominant display both with the bat and the ball. They did have a slow start after having put into bat by Punjab captain KL Rahul, but a sturdy partnership between Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya brought them right into the game as the team posted 191/4 on board. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Chahar and James Pattinson carried the momentum with the ball to restrict Punjab to 143/8 in 20 overs.

Having said that, let's have a look at some of the key stats from the game.

Record-breaking innings for Sharma and Mumbai:

The Mumbai captain, Rohit Sharma, scored his second half-century of Indian T20 League 2020 on Thursday, this time notching 70 off just 45 deliveries, which included eight fours and three sixes, once again proving why he is one of the best players in the shortest format of the game. In the process, the 33-year-old became only the third batsman to score 5000 IPL runs ?behind Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. Furthermore, this quick-fire knock was his third-best return against Punjab in the league.

Match 19, Deccan vs. Punjab, 01 May 2008 76
Match 13, Punjab vs. Mumbai, 01 Oct 2020 70

There were further milestones as well. This was Sharma’s 38th half-century in the league, which is now the joint second-most in the league alongside Suresh Raina, with only David Warner head of the duo with 44 half-centuries. A whopping 71.43% of Sharma’s 70 runs came through boundaries, with the opener hitting most of his runs (26) on covers and mid-wicket (16).

Player Mat Inns 50s
David Warner 129 129 44
Suresh Raina 193 189 38
Rohit Sharma 192* 187 38
Shikhar Dhawan 162 161 37
Virat Kohli 180 172 36
Gautam Gambhir 154 152 36

Sharma's departure left Mumbai in tantrums, and for all right reason. The team, after the end of 14th over, had posted just 87/3. The team then went on to score a whopping 89 runs in the last five overs, with the likes of Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya combining for 67 runs to take Mumbai all the way to 191/4, which is now their highest total while batting first against Punjab.

Punjab pacers on two different end of spectrum

Sheldon Cottrell gave Punjab a glaring start by dismissing Quinton de Kock in the very first over, which was, in fact, a wicket-maiden. He did concede 10 and seven in his second and third over respectively, but the West Indies pacer made a brilliant comeback in his fourth and final over, giving away just three runs. The 31-year-old Jamaican ended with a figure of 20/1, which is now his most economical spell of the ongoing edition.

Rajasthan 3 52 1 17.33
Mumbai 4 20 1 5

While Cottrell kept Mumbai in check, a certain Jimmy Neesham was hit all around the park. Bought into attack in the seventh over, the New Zealand all-rounder did great initially, conceding just 12 in his first two overs before being hit for 22 runs by Rohit Sharma in the third. In his final over, the Kiwi gave away 18 and ended his night with an unwanted figure of 52/0, his worst ever spell in the competition.

Punjab have a glaring conundrum in their hands after four completed matches where they have won just one and lost three. How many players do they leave unused in the line-up?

In the competition so far, the Punjab openers, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal have batted out 164 and 155 balls respectively. Nobody else has batted more than 60 balls. Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan and James Neesham have faced 14, 20 and 7 balls respectively.

The make-up of the Punjab line-up is very similar to that of the typical T20 team - top-heavy and light in the middle. But when the openers have been this good without taking risks and the middle-order has had so fewer opportunities, why would Punjab try and fit in too many batsmen?

James Neesham's selection

The selection of James Neesham is perhaps the most bizarre of all. The Kiwi all-rounder has bowled 10 overs in three innings and conceded runs at a rate of 10.50. His batting is underutilized given his batting position. When a proper bowler in Chris Jordan or Mujeeb-ur-Rahman can be brought in, Neesham is surplus to their requirements.

Balancing the lower middle-order with no Neesham will be a challenge if Glenn Maxwell continues to be out of touch. If Mujeeb comes in for Neesham, it will help Punjab add a different dimension to their attack early on with Sheldon Cottrell and Mohammed Shami having some company in the powerplay overs.

The Sarfaraz Khan and Karun Nair cases

Sarfaraz Khan has been misused too at Punjab. More of a cheeky middle-overs batsman, Sarfaraz has often batted in the death with diminishing returns. His scoops, laps and nudges are better suited in the middle overs and when Punjab have a passenger in Karun Nair and Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell in the middle, No. 3 is the right position for Sarfaraz.

Karun Nair is a position wasted, particularly since he has no gears. Playing Mandeep Singh, known to finish off games ahead of him at No. 6 could help Punjab add flair and some lower-order stability without compromising too much on striking capacity.

Cottrell or Jordan

Sheldon Cottrell has leaked runs aplenty in the latter half of the innings. While his economy until the last four overs is quite impressive, not having that bowler in the death means Punjab need to add specialists to avert damage like the one that unfolded against Mumbai.

Cottrell and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman can be played alternatively with Chris Jordan in the setup too. It can help them space out their bowling strengths rather than rely too much on wickets upfront that's definitely not working.

Chris Gayle?

Chris Gayle, for now, should continue to be on the sidelines. The effect of partners from the same state batting together at the top is underestimated and Punjab have two players who were friends from teenage days in their opening slots in KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. While the Universe Boss can be handy against some attacks, splitting this opening pair could only harm, more than do good.

With Gayle out of the picture, Nicholas Pooran is the first choice overseas player with Sheldon Cottrell or Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, Chris Jordan and Glenn Maxwell (at least for now), holding onto places. If Maxwell continues to be a no-show, Mujeeb, Cottrell and Jordan could play in tandem to strengthen the bowling.

ShThe Indian T20 League auction had some edge of the seat thrilling moments with franchises in a neck and neck race for some of the best cricketing talents in the world.

With some extraordinary buys at whopping prices (cue Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell), we take a look at how good the franchises were at the auction table and if the cash they dished out for the top buys is worth it.

Pat Cummins - ?/strong>15.5 crore - Kolkata

15.5 crores for a fast bowler might seem a tad too much especially when you have seven other pacers in the squad. But look closer and you see Kolkata's issues last season stemmed from not having a proper pace bowling spearhead to guide their young domestic pacers - the likes of Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi and Prasidh Krishna. Cummins on the Eden pitch could breathe fire and even at 15.5 crores is a worthy buy for the franchise.

Verdict: Excellent

Glenn Maxwell - ?/strong>10.75 crore - Punjab

Glenn Maxwell was always expected to rake in big money at the auction after his recent exploits in T20 cricket. Despite the break he took owing to mental health issues, Maxwell remained hot property at the auction with franchises entering a bidding war for him. At 10.75 crore, Punjab seemed quite happy to acquire his services. But with an average of 22.9 in the history of the league, Maxwell has proved to be inconsistent and that kind of money could prove to be too much for the Australian.

Verdict: Poor

Chris Morris - ?/strong>10 crore - Bangalore

Bangalore came into the auction hoping to pick a death bowler and a lower-order finisher. In Chris Morris, they found both and the franchise was pretty keen to get him on board. Morris, who has been in good form in the Mzansi Super League, is a perfect fit in the Bangalore squad and will fulfill multiple roles in the side.

Verdict: Good

Sheldon Cottrell - Rs 8.5 crore - Punjab

The West Indian left-arm seamer has been hitting headlines with his uncomfortable length and pace and can also generate swing upfront. A thinking bowler who can bowl variations and change his plans on the go, Cottrell is a valuable addition, particularly with the left-arm angle posing a massive threat. Punjab were keen on bringing him aboard and shelled out ?.5 crore from their 40-plus budget. Considering that, Cottrell is a good buy.

Verdict: Good

Nathan Coulter-Nile - ?/strong>8 crore - Mumbai

At first glance you wonder if Mumbai need Nathan Coulter-Nile. They have Quinton de Kock, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Trent Boult and Mitchell McClenaghan as their foreign players already with a slew of others including the recently traded in Sherfane Rutherford also available.

But, with Malinga no longer as effective and Boult's T20 credentials questionable, the Aussie could fit in snugly in the line-up. Coulter-Nile is also a ferocious ball striker and can fulfill late-order hitting duties too. Overall, for Mumbai, the Aussie seamer is a pretty good buy although with his record at Bangalore, there is reason to wait before giving out a verdict.

Verdict: Average

West Indies make the trip down to India for a limited-overs series comprising of three T20Is and three ODIs. This is the second time the teams will be facing each other in a bilateral this year, with India having travelled to the Caribbean right after the World Cup ended earlier this year.

The teams will complete the T20 series first and India clearly have the upper hand, having whitewashed the Windies 3-0 in the T20Is last time out. However, West Indies are no slouches themselves- they have won the T20 World Cup twice, the only team to do so, and have exciting young talent in their squad.

Having said that, let us have a look at which players are good enough from both teams to form a combined T20 XI: (Note: The XI comprises of players only part of the squad announced for the upcoming T20 series)

Top order: KL Rahul/Rohit Sharma/Virat Kohli (c)

The top three is an all-Indian list and there would hardly be any debate about this. Rohit Sharma has had the time of his life in 2o19, scoring five centuries at the World Cup before revelling in his new role as Test opener against South Africa. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, is simply class-apart and is arguably the best all-format batsman in the world currently.

KL Rahul boasts of a great record in T20s, and at the moment is the better opener in the shortest format instead of Shikhar Dhawan, who is out injured for the series anyway. He is also in a great form in domestic limited-overs tournaments and should open alongside Rohit in the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2020.

Middle-order: Shreyas Iyer/Shimron Hetmyer/Nicholas Pooran (wk)/Kieron Pollard

Shreyas Iyer did more than enough in the recently-concluded Bangladesh T20s to make the no.4 spot his own in the Indian limited-overs set-up and he retains that same position in the combined XI.

Shimron Hetmyer makes it to the team on the basis of his sheer talent and unpredictability, and he is also helped by the fact that other middle-order options from India like Manish Pandey have not really done much of note in the opportunities they have got.

Nicholas Pooran, appointed vice-captain for the T20s, takes the gloves ahead of Rishabh Pant, who despite multiple chances, has not been all that impressive in the shorter formats. Kieron Pollard takes the all-rounder’s slot ahead of Shivam Dube simply because of his vast experience and proven capabilities in the international stage.

Bowlers: Jason Holder/Deepak Chahar/Yuzvendra Chahal/Sheldon Cottrell

Former Windies captain, Jason Holder comes in quite late at no.8 in the XI, considering he can hit the ball a long way and is quite an underrated T20 bowler. Deepak Chahar is an obvious choice in a T20 XI, with his recent exploits more than proving his case.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Sheldon Cottrell bring up the tail. Chahal is the lone spinner and while a case can be made for Kuldeep Yadav, he has been out of the limited-overs set-up since the World Cup and is making a comeback from injury anyhow.

Cottrell enjoyed a decent World Cup outing and his ability to hit the deck hard can prove to be useful though he will need to be mindful of his lengths.

West Indies beat Afghanistan by 47 runs on Saturday to claim their first one-day series win in more than five years as their bowlers took control amid an invasion of moths.

Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase and Hayden Walsh each took three wickets as Kieron Pollard's side wrapped up the three-match series with a game to spare. Afghanistan have now lost 11 one-day internationals in a row.

Wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran hit 67 off 50 balls to put backbone in the West Indies innings.

Openers Shai Hope (43) and Evin Lewis (54) put on 98 for the first wicket but the batsmen then lost their way until Pooran's man-of-the-match fireworks that included three sixes and seven fours.

Pooran admitted it had been a "critical situation" when he came in. He helped take the score from 156-4 to 242-8.

The Afghanistan innings was overshadowed by tens of thousands of black moths and flies that took over the floodlit Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Dark clouds of insects rose up every time the ball hit a boundary rope and several West Indies fielders wore masks. The moths caused problems for bowlers and batsmen, and Pollard twice spoke to the umpires about the nuisance.

"I've never played with so many flies around," said the West Indies captain after the game. "Health is very important, so something's got to be done about that." The third and final one-day game is on Monday but there are T20 games and a Test to follow -- all in the same stadium.

Afghanistan lost Javed Ahmed in the opening over before Hazratullah Zazai (23) and Rahmat Shah (33) steadied in the innings. But easy wickets then fell before Najibullah Zadran (56) and Mohammad Nabi (32) put on 66 for the sixth wicket, hitting the insects for six.

No one else could keep up the pace after their departure. Captain Rashid Khan scored only two as the eighth man in.

"We recovered well, but couldn't finish it off," said Rashid. "The senior players did well, but we lost wickets in clusters." Walsh took three of the last four wickets to fall.

Pollard said it had been a great relief to finally win a one-day series for the first time since August 2014 when Bangladesh were the victims.

"I want to go back inside and celebrate with the guys. Winning is a habit and we need to enjoy ourselves but we will be playing to win again the day after tomorrow."

West Indies?paceman Sheldon Cottrell has been the talk of the town at the ongoing 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. However, it’s not his bowling that has made the headlines.

It’s the Jamaican’s, who also serves in the Army, celebration that has had everyone rooting for him this time. Cottrell’s ‘march and salute?has been such a hit that fans, in the past few weeks, have taken to social media to show their appreciation and also share their version of the same.

And on Thursday, Indian pacer Mohammad Shami too joined the bandwagon as he was seen mimicking the celebration after Cottrell was dismissed during their group stage game at Old Trafford.

This, however, didn’t go down well with a few fans and it was no surprise that they took to social media to make their voices heard.

Meanwhile, Cottrell chose to look at the lighter side of the issue and responded with a funny one-liner in Hindi.

It’s not been a tournament to remember for the Windies. With the side already out of the race for a place in the semifinals, the men from the Caribbean islands will be hoping to wrap up their time in England on a positive note when they face Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in their remaining two group games in the coming week.

West Indies paceman Sheldon Cottrell has handed plenty of batsmen their marching orders at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and seen his unique celebration win an army of followers online.

A serving member of the Jamaica Defence Force, Cottrell's march and salute has been his trademark since bursting onto the international scene in 2013 and the distinct send-off has caught the imagination of fans at the World Cup.

The left-arm quick returned figures of 4-56 in his team's five-run loss to New Zealand on Saturday to take his tally for the tournament to nine.

"It's a military-style salute. I'm a soldier by profession. Me saluting is just to show my respect to the Jamaica Defence Force," Cottrell told the BBC.

"I do it every time I get a wicket. I practised it for six months when I was training in the army," he said.

Among the many videos of the Cottrell imitation on Twitter, a clip of a young boy and girl copying the bowler's salute in a British street has gone viral.

The person who shot the video of the young fans asked the paceman where he could buy a West Indies jersey with his name at the back.

Cottrell responded by inviting the youngsters to the West Indies' next match against India on Thursday but is concerned about them missing school for the clash at Old Trafford.

"I’m looking into it for you," Cottrell replied on Twitter. "Thanks for your support. Would like to invite you to the game in Manchester if your not already attending? #salute (it's a week day tho)."

However, not everyone is a fan of Cottrell's flamboyance, with England coach Trevor Bayliss telling ESPN Cricinfo it annoys older cricket-watchers.

West Indies players have always been synonymous with innovative celebratory styles.

The Darren Sammy-led side celebrated their World Twenty20 title win with a trademark "Champion Dance" in 2016 just as the 'Gangnam-Style' dance was used during their first T20 triumph in 2012.

Nathan Coulter-Nile hit 92, the highest score by a number eight batsman in World Cup history, as champions Australia staged a remarkable rally against the West Indies at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

Australia were in dire straits at 38 for four following an aggressive start by the West Indies' quicks.

But they finished on 288 all out after former captain Steve Smith (73), who put on 102 for the seventh wicket with Coulter-Nile, began the repair job.

"It was the sort of wicket where you have to take your time and get used to the bounce. Some balls seemed to rear up and the short balls felt really quick. I don't know if it's the pitch or their bowlers," said Coulter-Nile, who was dropped on 61 by Shimron Hetmyer.

The West Indies had bounced out Pakistan for just 105 when winning their tournament opener at Nottinghamshire's headquarters last week and adopted similar tactics after captain Jason Holder won the toss on a sunny day.

Oshane Thomas struck first when Australia captain Aaron Finch (six) was caught behind off a lifting delivery.

David Warner (three) was then caught at backward point off Sheldon Cottrell that saw the left-arm quick -- still a member of the Jamaica Defence Force -- celebrate with his trademark salute.

Australia were now 21 for two, with boos ringing out as Warner walked off and Smith walked on -- a now familiar response by crowds in England to the pair having only recently returned from year-long bans for their part in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

- Coulter-Nile cashes in -

Usman Khawaja was twice hit on the body on Thursday before he edged an edge off Andre Russell was brilliantly caught one-handed by diving wicket-keeper Shai Hope.

Australia's 36 for three was quickly transformed into 38 for four when Glenn Maxwell was out for a second-ball duck, a top-edged skyed hook off a Cottrell bouncer comfortably held by Hope.

Left-hander Alex Carey (45) gave Smith some sound support in a stand of 68 before he was caught behind off Russell.

Smith had a lucky break, on 26, he top-edged a hook off West Indies captain Jason Holder only for Cottrell at long leg to slip and fall over as he eyed a catch.

His patient innings ended when he flicked Thomas high towards deep backward square only for Cottrell, skirting the boundary, to grab the ball one-handed, throw it back into the field of play as he stepped over the rope -- thereby avoiding a six -- and complete a sensational catch without touching the rope.

But Coulter-Nile cashed in as he surpassed his previous international best of 34.

His blistering assault off 60 balls featuring eight fours and four sixes also saw him beat former Zimbabwe international Heath Streak's previous World Cup best by a No 8 of 72.

But in sight of the all-time one-day international high score by a No 8 -- 95 not out by England's Chris Woakes -- he drove Carlos Brathwaite to Holder at long-off.
