The India vs Sri Lanka rivalry is one of the most enthralling and exciting contests in one-day international (ODI) cricket

India and Sri Lanka clashed for the first time in ODI cricket in Manchester in 1979. The Bandula Warnapura-led Sri Lanka beat India by 47 runs in the Prudential World Cup clash.

The Sri Lankan cricket team later travelled to India for their first ODI series in September 1982. Kapil Dev’s India whitewashed Sri Lanka 3-0 in the three-match ODI series.

Three years later, Sri Lanka hosted India in another three-match ODI series. The series ended 1-1. Since then, India and Sri Lanka have faced each other frequently in the ODI format.

The Indian cricket team holds a superior head-to-head record against Sri Lanka in ODI cricket, winning 96 of the 165 matches that they have played so far. Sri Lanka have registered 57 wins. As many as 11 matches have ended with no results, while one match was tied.

Both the sides have registered numerous records during their thrilling battles and here’s a closer look at India vs Sri Lanka ODI records and stats.

India vs Sri Lanka ODI records and stats

Highest team total

The Indian cricket team holds the record for the highest team total in India vs Sri Lanka in ODIs. During the first ODI of Sri Lanka’s tour of India in 2009, the hosts recorded a massive total of 414/7 in their 50 overs in Rajkot. Put in to bat, India rode on Virender Sehwag’s 146 and fifties from MS Dhoni (72) and Sachin Tendulkar (69) to post a huge total on the board. In reply, Tillakaratne Dilshan (160), captain Kumar Sangakkara (90) and Upul Tharanga (67) almost pulled off an incredible run-chase, however, just fell short by three runs.

Lowest team total

India also registered the lowest team total in this ODI fixture in 2000 against the Lankan Lions. Chasing 300 against Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy, the Sourav Ganguly-led India were bowled out for 54 in 26.3 overs in Sharjah. Robin Singh (11) was the only Indian cricketer to score in double digits in that innings. Left-arm pacer Chaminda Vaas was the wrecker-in-chief for Sri Lanka with five wickets for just 14 runs in his 9.3 overs. Earlier, captain Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 189 off 161 balls to power Sri Lanka to 299/5 in their allotted 50 overs.

Most runs

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar scored the most runs in India vs Sri Lanka ODIs. Between 1990 and 2012, the former right-handed batter amassed 3,113 runs in 84 matches at an average of 43.84 and strike rate of 87.54. Tendulkar slammed eight hundreds and 17 fifties against Sri Lanka in the 50-over format. His highest ODI score against Sri Lanka is 138. For Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya holds the record for the most ODI runs against India. He accumulated 2,899 runs in 89 ODIs at an average of 36.23.

Most wickets

Former Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan picked up the most wickets in this ODI fixture. The legendary off-spinner bagged 74 ODI wickets in 63 matches against India at an average of 31.78 and an economy of 4.28. He registered his best ODI bowling figures of 7/30 versus India during a Champions Trophy clash in Sharjah in 2000. Among Indian bowlers, Zaheer Khan scalped the most wickets in the India vs Sri Lanka ODIs. The former left-arm fast bowler claimed 66 wickets in 48 matches at an economy of 4.98.

Highest individual score

Rohit Sharma holds the record for the highest individual score in India vs Sri Lanka ODIs. During the fourth ODI of Sri Lanka’s tour of India in 2014, Rohit Sharma smashed the world record for the highest score in a one-day international (ODI) innings at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Rohit scored 264 off just 173 balls, laced with 33 fours and nine maximums. India won the match by a massive 153 runs.

Best bowling figures

Muttiah Muralitharan registered the best bowling figures in India vs Sri Lanka ODIs. The former Sri Lankan spinner finished with figures of 10-1-30-7 during the sixth match of Champions Trophy in Sharjah in 2000. Muralitharan took the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar, Robin Singh, Vinod Kambli, Yuvraj Singh, Hemang Badani and Vijay Dahiya to help Sri Lanka bowl out India for 226 in 48.5 overs and register a comprehensive 68-run victory.

Highest partnership

Former Indian batters Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid hold the record for the highest partnership in India vs Sri Lanka ODI cricket. The Indian duo forged a 318-run stand for the second wicket against Sri Lanka during their ICC World Cup 1999 clash in Taunton. Captaining a cricket team is a vital role in cricket that not many players can handle. There have been plenty of instances in the past where the burden and pressure that comes with captaincy affected top-quality players?performances on the field.

Even the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar was not spared from the downward spiral that one can find themselves drowning in due to the pressures of captaining a side.

After all, it is believed that in cricket that a captain’s role in affecting the fortunes of a team is even more important than that of the head coach.

Add to that, the extra pressure is associated with the sport in general in the cricket-crazy nation of India and it is easy to understand why skippering the Indian cricket national team is not everyone's cup of tea.

Over the years, India has had the luxury of boasting some great captains who wrote their own glorious chapters in the annals of cricketing history.

Whether it is Captain Cool, MS Dhoni’s calm and calculated approach to the game, or Virat Kohli’s unmatched aggression, there’s not one tried and tested method to being a successful captain with the Indian national team. With that in mind, let’s have a look at the most successful captain in India.

Most successful captain in India by wins

Rank Captain Captaincy Span Matches Wins Losses Win Percentage
1 MS Dhoni 2007-2018 332 135 60 53.61
2 Virat Kohli 2013-2022 213 178 120 63.38
3 Mohammad Azharuddin 1990-1999 221 104 90 47.05
4 Sourav Ganguly 1999-2005 195 97 78 49.74
5 Rohit Sharma* 2017-2023 80 62 18 77.50

*Captaincy reign currently active

MS Dhoni - 178 wins

Besides the legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni is the only other Indian captain to win a World Cup for the country. Dhoni, in fact, has two World Cup triumphs as Indian skipper under his belt. His first was the inaugural T20 World Cup triumph in South Africa in 2007, and his second was the 2011 ODI World Cup win which ended a 28-year wait for the most desired ODI  trophy after Kapil Dev led India to the title in 1983. Dhoni also won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy with India and has the most wins as skipper of the national side with 178 wins from 332 games across cricket’s three formats. He also led India to the number ranking in the ICC Test rankings and is widely regarded as the greatest skipper the country has ever produced.

Virat Kohli - 135 wins

As far as win percentage as a skipper is concerned, only Rohit Sharma has a higher success rate (77.50) than Viart Kohli. The swashbuckling batter from Delhi has a 63.38 win percentage as India's skipper across formats and he scored a ton of runs for the team, not letting the pressure of captaincy affect his batting performance. He won 38 out of 69 series across formats as India's captain and has the most runs as a skipper. During his reign as skipper India was ranked one in all three formats of the game and he also led the team to the most Test wins besides also scoring 20 centuries as India’s red-ball captain. His win percentage of 63.38 is almost 10 more than MS Dhoni’s 53.61. With 135 wins, Kohli has the second-highest number of wins as India's captain in cricketing history.

Mohammad Azharuddin - 104 wins

Mohammad Azharuddin led India from 1990 to 1999 at a time when Indian cricket hadn’t scaled the heights of today. Still looking to establish themselves firmly as one of the big boys of the sport during Azharuddin’s reign as skipper, it is safe to say the elegant right-hander did an excellent job leading from the front both with the bat and on the field. An excellent fielder who wouldn’t be out of place in the modern era, Azharuddin has the third-highest wins (104) as an Indian skipper. He led India in three World Cups campaigns and had the best finish as a semi-finalist in 1996.

The BCCI presidents list features several influential politicians, businessmen and former Indian cricket team players.

Since the formation of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 1928, the BCCI president is considered to be one of the most influential posts in the country, considering the popularity and financial power of the governing body for cricket in India.

Even though the BCCI president post is an honorary one, several politicians, royalty, businessmen and cricketers have been appointed to occupy the prestigious post over the years.

How is the BCCI president elected?

The BCCI president is elected at the governing body’s annual general meeting, with each of the 30 affiliates of the BCCI getting an opportunity to exercise their vote.

Additionally, the outgoing BCCI president exercises his vote as the chairman of the meeting. Usually, the BCCI president has a tenure of three years and is rotated zone-wise across India. The BCCI president is reportedly paid a salary of INR five crores annually.

Who is the current BCCI president?

The 1983 World Cup-winning cricketer Roger Binny is the current BCCI president since taking over the job in October 2022. Roger Binny suceeded Sourav Ganguly for the top post at the BCCI’s annual general meeting, which was held in Mumbai on October 18, 2022.

Who was the first BCCI president?

Raymond Eustace Grant Govan was the first BCCI president, elected in 1928. He held the position till 1933. Govan was the managing director of the Govan Bros. Ltd, a leading business house at that time.

Interestingly, Jagmohan Dalmiya held the post of BCCI president thrice. The former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president was elected BCCI prez from 2001-2004 and was made interim president in 2013 before being re-elected in 2015. Unfortunately, he passed away while in office in 2015.

Narayanaswami Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar have been handed the BCCI president post twice previously.

To score a fifty and claim a five-wicket haul in an ODI is considered to be an exceptional achievement for any cricketer. Till date, only 22 cricketers have registered a fifty and five wickets in an ODI

West Indies cricket legend Viv Richards was the first cricketer to achieve the rare feat. During the first ODI of the West Indies tour of New Zealand in 1987, Richards smashed 119 off just 113 balls to help the visitors post 237/9 in their allotted 50 overs. The West Indies captain followed it up by picking five wickets for just 41 runs in his quota of 10 overs to bundle out New Zealand for 142 in Dunedin. West Indies won the match by 95 runs.

Kris Srikkanth was the first Indian cricketer and second overall to register a fifty and five wickets in an ODI.

Electing to field, India rode on Srikkanth’s 5/27 to restrict New Zealand to 196/9 in their 50 overs. In reply, the swashbuckling Indian opening batter scored 70 off 87 balls to guide India to a four-wicket win in Visakhapatnam.

Former Australia all-rounder Mark Waugh was the third player to achieve the accomplishment of scoring a fifty and bagging a five-wicket haul in an ODI.

After Australia captain Mark Taylor won the toss and opted to bat, Waugh played an impressive knock of 57 off 70 balls to help the hosts post 198/8 in their 50 overs in Melbourne. Defending a below-par total, Waugh claimed five wickets for just 24 runs to bowl out West Indies for 194.

Apart from Kris Srikkanth, former captain Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh are the other two Indians to accomplish the unique record.

During the fourth ODI of Zimbabwe’s tour of India in 2000, Ganguly bagged five wickets for 34 runs in his 10 overs to bowl out the visitors for 165 in Kanpur. In reply, the India captain scored an unbeaten 71 to power India to a nine-wicket victory.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh scored a fifty and picked five wickets against Ireland during an ICC Cricket World Cup match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore in 2011.

After the left-arm spinner recorded figures of 10-0-31-5 to bowl Ireland out for 207, the southpaw followed it up with an unbeaten half-century (50) to help the hosts claim a five-wicket win.

Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi has achieved the feat three times - the most by any player in international cricket. Afridi recorded the incredible milestone against England, Sri Lanka and West Indies in his ODI career.

Namibia’s JJ Smit is the latest entrant to the elile list of players that have scored a fifty and got a five-wicket haul in the same ODI. The Namibia captain scored 56 and later claimed 5/26 to help his team beat Oman by 40 runs during an ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 encounter in Windhoek in 2021.

Partnerships are crucial in cricket. Especially in One Day International (ODI) cricket, building a stand becomes essential in not only stabilizing an innings but also scoring at a consistent rate, an important aspect in limited-overs cricket.

For 15 years, one Indian pair dominated the charts for ODI partnerships - Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. The duo has scored 8,227 runs as partners on the crease, including a whopping 26 century stands and 29 half-century stands.

Here, we look at the partnerships in ODI cricket which have scored 100 or more runs the most number of times.

Sourav Ganguly-Sachin Tendulkar (India)

26 century partnerships

The two Indian greats stitched together multiple mammoth partnerships between 1992 and 2007 before Sourav Ganguly retired from international cricket. In their 176 innings together, mostly as openers, they have scored at an average of 47.55 per game.

Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar’s 26 100+ run stands is the most ODI century partnerships by any pair till date.

Their highest partnership is worth 258 runs and it came against Kenya in a triangular series which also included South Africa. This game, played in October 2001, saw Ganguly score 111 (124) and Tendulkar score 146 (132), helping India win by 186 runs.

Tillakaratne Dilshan-Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka)

20 century partnerships

Like Sachin and Sourav, this iconic Sri Lankan duo also had a 15-year long reign - from 2000 to 2015 - in ODI cricket. In 108 innings together, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara have scored 5,475 runs as partners at an average of 53.67.

Among their 20 centuries, their highest partnership stand is 210* in the 2015 World Cup against Bangladesh, their last ICC tournament together. Dilshan (161* off 146) and Sangakkara (105 off 76) helped put up 332/1 for the Lankans, who defeated Bangladesh by 92 runs.

Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma (India)

18 century partnerships

For 11 years and counting, opener Rohit Sharma and No. 3 batter Virat Kohli have stitched together memorable partnerships for India. The two have batted together in 81 innings.

They have 18 century-stands together and 4,906 runs between them till now. Their highest stand of 246 runs came during a chase of West Indies?322/8. Sharma scored 152 (117) and Kohli 140 (107) to win the game for India by eight wickets.

Shikhar Dhawan-Rohit Sharma (India)

18 century partnerships

Rohit Sharma’s second appearance on the list, sees him paired up with fellow opener, Shikhar Dhawan. Between 2011 and 2022, the duo have shared partnerships in 114 games, scoring 5,153 runs at an average of 46.

Their best stand is 210 against Pakistan at the 2018 Asia Cup. While Sharma remained unbeaten at 111 in 119 balls, Dhawan scored 114 from 100 deliveries. This is also India’s highest first-wicket stand against Pakistan.

Adam Gilchrist-Matthew Hayden (Australia)

16 century partnerships

Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden shared the crease in 117 ODI matches between 2000 and 2008. They stitched together 16 stands of 100 or more and accounted for 5,409 runs as partners. They scored at an average of 47.44 while batting together.

Their highest stand is worth 172 runs and came in the 2007 ICC World Cup final with Gilchrist scoring 149 (104) and Hayden pitching in with 38 (55). Australia won the game by 53 runs against Sri Lanka and in turn, won the World Cup that year.
