As many as eight Chelsea players have been put into quarantine after six of them were reportedly tested positive for the ongoing global virus. The likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic and Fikayo Tomori are said to be in self-isolation after returning from the Greek island of Mykonos before pre-season training began last weekend.

Meanwhile, Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Emerson and Michy Batshuayi have also been advised to stay away from Chelsea's Cobham base. No names have been confirmed so far, but Telegraph reports that six players have contracted the virus, while the remaining two are in isolation because of close contact with those affected.

The players returned to training on Monday after a slightly extended break, but those who have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic will report after their isolation period gets over. Those tested positive will have to self-isolate themselves for 10 days and need to return with a negative test result before they can resume training.

The number of positive cases has been on a rise amongst the Premier League clubs during the summer break, with 14 new cases recorded at 12 different clubs. Meanwhile, Sheffield United, Brighton and West Ham United have also reported cases in recent weeks.

Chelsea, who finished fourth in the 2019/20 Premier League season, have been quite active in the transfer market. Having already concluded the deals of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell, they are also said to be in the final stages of roping in the likes of Thiago Silva from PSG and Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. 21-year-old defender Malang Sarr has also reportedly agreed a five-year contract with the Blues. The former Nice defender will join Chelsea on a free transfer.

Meanwhile, the Blues are set to kick off their 2020/21 Premier League campaign against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Monday, September 14. But before that, Lampard's side will square off against the same opponent in a friendly on Saturday, with Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech expected to debut.

The quarantine news, however, is a blow to Chelsea as they were a part of the UK government's pilot scheme of welcoming the football fans back into stadiums for the first time since March.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have made significant headways in the transfer market, bolstering their squad with some consequential additions like Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. But with the latter’s arrival, a certain Tammy Abraham’s part in Lampard’s adolescent wave has come under heavy scrutiny.

The 22-year-old striker, who impressed one and all while on loan at Aston Villa in 2018/19 Championship season, made an exhilarating start to the recently concluded Premier League season. Seven goals in his opening five league games paved way for Chelsea to finally have answers to their number nine woes, and the streak continued right until Chelsea’s 3-0 home win against Burnley in early January where Abraham notched his 13th goal of the league.

A slump in form since coupled with Olivier Giroud stepping up on given opportunities have now seen Abraham making a handful of cameo appearances since football has resumed. He has, in fact, played full 90 minutes on just two occasions, with one of them coming in an FA Cup encounter against Leicester City. As far as goals are concerned, he has notched just two goals since scoring against Burnley, and Lampard has heavily favoured Giroud in getting goals.

The Frenchman, since the Premier League’s project restart, has been breathtaking, to say the least, scoring seven goals in 10 appearances in all competitions.

Abraham’s plunge has indeed been catastrophic, but he has time and again been criticised for lacking the clinical edge especially against the team from the top half of the table. Except for his goal against Arsenal in December last year, he has failed to score or even provide an assist against the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and even Tottenham.

The issues are deeper as far as Abraham is concerned. While his attitude since being dropped from the starting XI has been questioned, his contractual situation remains another worry. He did extend his stay earlier this month, but that was merely a year’s extension to the deal he signed in 2017. The striker hasn’t been given a pay rise, and this is where things might go south.

At 22, the young forward would want to be a part of the first team for as much as he could, but Werner’s arrival is expected to shake things up a bit. But as things stand for Abraham, he still has Olivier Giroud to contend with, let alone fight the newly arrived German international for the first-team spot.

Is Abraham on the verge of becoming another Michy Batshuayi for Chelsea? While another tenure on loan is looking highly unlikely, a greater possibility is that Lampard would majorly use him either as an impact sub against the teams who sit deep and defend, or for the cup games to give Werner a rest.

Or if Lampard is to tweak his tactic a bit, he can try linking both of his attackers (Abraham and Werner) in an old-school 4-4-2 approach, which is certainly not new to the German, having already played alongside Yussuf Poulsen at RB Leipzig.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has warned Tammy Abraham not to let protracted contract talks affect his performances.

Abraham has scored 15 goals during a breakthrough season with Chelsea, but the England striker has failed to find the back of the net since January 11.

The 22-year-old reportedly came close to agreeing an improved contract earlier in the season during his hot streak. But his only start since the pandemic was in the defeat at West Ham last week as the more experienced Olivier Giroud earned Lampard's faith.

Abraham's fellow youngsters Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have all signed new Chelsea contracts over the past year.

Yet to follow suit, Abraham has just under two years remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge.Yet Lampard expects him to stay focused as fourth-placed Chelsea chase a qualification for the Champions League.

"I think Tammy's contract, we are not at a critical level with it," Lampard said ahead of Tuesday's trip to Crystal Palace.

"I will leave it with him and the club to discuss that side of it. I don't think it is something that is clearly in his mind now, at least it shouldn't be.

"What needs to be in his mind now is these games we have coming up and how much he can give us on the pitch, whether coming on as a sub or starting the game."

Lampard has told Abraham the only way to force his way back into the side is to working harder than ever in training.

"He has had a really good season, he hasn't scored as much in the second half of the season," he said.

"But as a young player, it is always clear when you have these periods there is only one way out of it and that is work and repetition in training.

"I think that is where Tammy is at. I think the contract will hopefully look after itself between him and the club and he just needs to focus on giving us that Tammy that we had earlier in the season.

"He was giving defenders so much of a problem in games and scoring regularly and it all came from how he was training and working in the week.

"That is just what he has to sustain all the time."

We have seen some great action in this season of the Premier League just as any other season. The likes of Sergio Aguero, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, among others, have been at their lethal best as expected. However, there are some players who have stepped up with their performances and exceeded all sorts of expectations this season. That said, let's have a look at three of the best players among them.

Danny Ings

After a terrific opening season of the Premier League in 2014/15, during which he bagged 11 goals along with four assists, his career over the last four seasons was largely marred by injuries. But it seems like he is back to the peak of his fitness once again as Ings was seen in prolific scoring form for Southampton this season.

Read | Three best signings in the January transfer window

Ings has already scored 15 goals this season and has one assist on top of that as well. That's not only his individual best in any Premier League season but the fourth most tally of goals among all players in this season as well. Ings has been exceptional with his finishing and has played like a one-man army for Southampton. He would be eager to carry this form into the upcoming seasons.

Tammy Abraham

Chelsea's 20-year-old academy product has enjoyed a pretty successful season with the senior squad. Abraham has been trusted upon as their first team forward in the absence of other established names in their squad. Although Olivier Giroud and Mitchy Batshuayi were also available, manager Frank Lampard showed immense faith in the youngster.

He didn't disappoint though. Abraham fully repaid Lampard's faith in him as he is their top scorer in the league this season with 13 goals and five assists in 25 appearances. He has pace and his sense of positioning helps him to get into unmanned pockets inside the 18-yard-box on most occasions. He will only grow as a player with the amount of exposure he got in this season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The Everton forward has had an immense growth as a player this season, so much that he has even overshadowed their star player Richarlison with his performances. Calvert-Lewin is the club's top scorer this season with 13 goals and an assist to his name in 27 league appearances for the club.

His goal tally in this season is more than what he had scored in the previous three seasons combined. Calvert-Lewin's career graph has always had an upward growth curve. He scored just one goal in 2016/17 season after playing just 347 minutes, four goals and eight assists in 2017/18 season after 1871 minutes, and finally six goals and five assists in 2018/18 seasons after 1769 minutes on the field. This season, Calvert-Lewin has been even more efficient as his 13 goals have come in just 1904 minutes.

There had been fears that the 2019-20 Premier League season would end prematurely following its suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But there is still hope that the season will resume.

With that renewed hope, let’s take a look at five players who are the top contenders to win this year’s Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year award - or the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Any footballer aged 23 or below at the start of the campaign is eligible for the honours.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

A contender for the PFA Player of the Year award as well, Trent Alexander-Arnold, is without a doubt the top candidate for the Young Player of the Year honour as well. At the age of just 21, the Liverpool academy man has redefined the role of a right-back and has grown into one of the best, if not the best, in his position in the world.

Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed a stellar campaign that has seen him score two goals and register as many as 12 assists already ?matching his assist tally from the last season. The 21-year-old also has created the second-most number of chances in the top-flight this term (75).

Read | Five contenders for PFA Player of the Year award

The England international is one of Liverpool’s chief creative outlets and his value to the side is immense. With Liverpool all but confirmed to lift the title, provided the league resumes, Alexander-Arnold will have played a crucial role in their success.

Jack Grealish (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa might be staring at the prospect of dropping back to the second division when the campaign ends, but their captain Jack Grealish can look back upon the 2019-20 campaign on a personal level.

The 24-year-old, who played an integral role in Villa’s promotion to the top-flight, has been one of the few positives for the outfit from Midlands in a season that has failed to take flight. So far, Grealish has featured in 26 matches in all competitions, scoring seven goals, that include some bonafide stunners, and setting up six more.

Grealish has also created 69 goalscoring chances this season ?the fifth-highest tally in the league. Heavily linked with a summer switch to Manchester United, the Englishman could very well end the season with the Young Player of the Year award in his bag.

James Maddison (Leicester City)

Another young English talent that has grown leaps and bounds over the past couple of seasons after breaking through in the Championship, James Maddison has continued to shine bright for Leicester City and has played a key role in their push for a podium finish this term.

Read | Five centre-backs Manchester City should target in summer

The 23-year-old has been directly involved in nine goals for the Foxes in 28 league appearances (six goals and three assists), including strikes against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham. The creative hub of Brendan Rodgers?side, Maddison has also created 75 chances in league football this season.

On the back of his performances, the midfielder also managed to break into the England national team. Although Maddison’s form has dwindled since the turn of the year, there is no denying his influence on this Leicester team, making him a top contender for the Young Player of the Year award.

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

The serious injury he suffered a couple of months ago might have hurt his chances to go on to win the award, but Rashford’s contribution to this Manchester United team has been so immense that he deserves a place among the contenders.

Taking on the mantle of the Red Devils?talisman this season, the England international thrived until picking up an injury. Playing across the frontline, Rashford has come up with an impressive return of 14 goals from 22 league outings, while also chipping in with four assists.

Considering that the Manchester United academy graduate has hit the woodwork the most times this term (6), Rashford could have been leading the goalscoring charts had those shots gone into the net. With the season being pushed back, Rashford has a chance to return to action and if he does, the 22-year-old will definitely add to his current tally and finish the season on a strong note.

Tammy Abraham (Chelsea)

Like Rashford, another player whose season has been hampered by an injury, Tammy Abraham enjoyed a sensational start to the 2019-20 campaign and is one of the main reasons why Chelsea find themselves in a strong position in the top four race.

Donning the role of the Blues?main striker under new boss Frank Lampard ?a role that was thrust upon him owing to their transfer ban ?Abraham made the most of the opportunity and went on a goal-scoring spree early in the campaign before suffering a dip in form.

The 22-year-old has found the back of the net on 13 occasions in 25 league appearances this term and has also created four for his teammates. Abraham’s form for Chelsea saw him earn a call-up to the England national team as well. The impact that he has had in his first full season with the Blues?first-team makes him a contender for the PFA Young Player of the Year honours.

The top four race in the English Premier League has been blown wide open following Chelsea’s defeat to Newcastle in match week 23. With the Blues dropping points, the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Sheffield United are all within hot on their heels.

Similar is the case in the Indian Super League, where Mumbai City upset the champions Bengaluru FC to get their season back on track. With the final few gameweeks left now in the group stages, things seem to be heating up in the ISL with five teams vying for the top four places. With so many exciting match-ups this week in the footballing world, here’s a look at two fixtures to keep an eye out for.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

Games between these two London rivals have been fiery and full of goals in the past, and tends to favour the home side. Since 2016, the side playing at home has won on all but one of the occasions. That streak however was put to bed when the two teams met in December, as two late goals from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham helped Chelsea steal a 2-1 win at the Emirates.

Since that loss, Arsenal have been performing better under new manager Mikel Arteta, getting a win and two draws. The Gunners have scored 30 goals throughout the season thus far, but 13 of those have been scored by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese striker however will be unavailable for the Chelsea game after getting a red card and a three match ban in the Crystal Palace game. With Aubameyang out, the impetus on scoring falls on Alexander Lacazette and Nicholas Pepe, but they average a goal in 206 minutes and 390 minutes respectively; and against a top four side in Chelsea, one can expect that barren run to continue.

Chelsea too have not been very convincing this season, with their home record being below par. They have lost all the games in which they have conceded the first goal at home, and managed to get only 17 out of a possible 33 points at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have also found it difficult to get clean sheets at home, with just four thus far on home turf.

Watch out for:

Tammy Abraham: The 22-year-old forward has been at the thick of things for Chelsea this season, with 13 goals so far. He has however struggled against the traditional top six sides, but for one exception which came in the return fixture against Arsenal. The Gunners have just four clean sheets so far in the Premier League, and have on average conceded 1.3 goals per game. With such a porous defence, Chelsea’s Abraham would be licking his lips at the prospect of scoring a few more this week in this London derby.

Bengaluru FC vs Odisha FC

A scuffed shot from Bengaluru’s central defender Juanan made the difference when the two sides met last month. It was a close contest back then as both sides had their fair share of chances, but keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu pulled off a few good saves to give his side a win.

Odisha FC however are now on a four match winning streak and seem to have found their footing at just the right time in the Indian Super League, with Aridane Santana and Xisco Hernandez firing on all cylinders. Odisha are the joint-third highest scorers in the league, but could find things difficult against the meanest defence of the league in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru suffered a loss in their previous game against Mumbai City, and will look to bounce back as soon as possible. The last time the champions were defeated, they followed that up with four wins on the trot, and with captain Sunil Chhetri finding his feet, a similar outcome can be expected.

Watch out for:

Aridane Santana: The Odisha FC forward became the top-scorer in the Indian Super League after scoring twice in the last game against Hyderabad FC. Odisha FC are second on the stats list for most passes and most crosses, and having a six foot plus striker in Santana has proved beneficial for that style of play. Bengaluru’s centre backs Rahul Bheke and Albert Serran could therefore have a significant disadvantage when it comes to aerial duels against the Spaniard.

It’s another week of riveting football action as the English Premier League will be rekindled by the Manchester United-Liverpool rivalry, while AC Milan look to make their mark in Italy with a return of one of their own- Zlatan Ibrahimovic- finding his footing in the Serie A.

In the Indian Super League, Mumbai City welcome the champions Bengaluru FC in what is sure to be a feisty clash, while high flying Odisha FC will hope to continue their form as they face Hyderabad FC.

With so many spicy encounters to look forward to this week, Nostragamus fantasy managers could find themselves in a pickle. There are plenty of viable players to choose this weekend, but here are five names who could make the difference and give fantasy players some much-needed points.

SUNIL CHHETRI

Club: Bengaluru FC

Match: Mumbai City FC vs Bengaluru FC

India’s leading goal-scorer in last season’s ISL took some time to get going this term but the talismanic forward has well and truly found his goal scoring boots now. The striker has eight goals to his name, and scored in their previous game which was a 2-0 win over Jamshedpur FC. Chhetri also scored in the reverse fixture between the two sides earlier this season and would be optimistic to keep that record going.

XISCO HERNANDEZ

Club: Odisha FC

Match: Hyderabad FC vs Odisha FC

The Spanish winger ran the show for his club in their previous game against Mumbai City FC, setting up the first with a delightful pass from the right flank and scoring the second with a well-taken volley in a memorable home performance. The Spaniard has been the creative genius for his side, with his trickery and delicate passes lighting up the Indian Super League. Hernandez has five goals so far in the competition and a clash against bottom side Hyderabad FC would be a good chance to add to that tally.

FERRAN COROMINAS

Club: FC Goa

Match: ATK vs FC Goa

He’s the leading scorer of this season’s Indian Super League and would be confident of augmenting that tally in the clash against ATK. Ferran Corominas, better known simply as Coro, scored in the return fixture between the two sides and has also scored five goals in his last five appearances. With such an impeccable track record, it would be stupid to not have him in your fantasy teams.

TAMMY ABRAHAM

Club: Chelsea

Match: Newcastle vs Chelsea

Chelsea cruised to a comfortable 3-0 home victory against Burnley in game week 22 of the Premier League. Amongst the scorers for Frank Lampard’s side was 22-year-old Tammy Abraham. The centre forward has truly lifted the ‘number 9?off the club, scoring 13 times for the Blues, benefiting from the good play from wingers Willian and Mason Mount.

High on confidence, the lanky striker will now target Steve Bruce’s Newcastle, who are struggling to make up the numbers in defence with the likes of Jamal Laschelles, Paul Dumett and Fabian Schar all out injured.

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC

Club: AC Milan

Match: AC Milan vs SPAL

The intimidating striker from Sweden needed no time to adjust to his new club, as he scored in just his second appearance since joining from MLS franchise LA Galaxy. Ibrahimovic has been a proven goalscorer wherever he has been, and a home game against bottom team SPAL will be a good chance to augment that reputation. SPAL have conceded 28 times this season until now, and Ibrahimovic might just add to their misery this game week.

Frank Lampard said "sloppy" Chelsea need to be more clinical after they survived a tense finish to climb to third place in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory at lowly Watford on Saturday.

Lampard's side bounced back from their midweek League Cup defeat against Manchester United to make it five successive league wins.

The Blues have won eight of their past nine matches in all competitions as Lampard continues to make a good impression in his first season in charge.

His decision to go with unproven youngsters like Tammy Abraham, who opened the scoring, has been a shrewd move, while Christian Pulisic, scorer of the second, is justifying his hefty price tag after starting the season on the bench.

Gerard Deulofeu's late VAR-awarded penalty came too late to stop Chelsea recording a seventh successive away win in all competitions.

They are just two points behind second-placed Manchester City despite being unable to sign players in the summer due to a transfer ban.

But with a trip to City looming and Champions League ties against Ajax and Valencia on the schedule, November will provide much sterner tests of Chelsea's progress than this stroll in the autumn chill at Vicarage Road.

"We played really well, our midfield was outstanding, but we just cannot have that sloppy bit near the end," Lampard said.

"It was a terrible 10 minutes considering how the game had gone. We need to be more clinical, we got a bit sloppy.

"We rely on our goalkeeper for those moments at the end of the game and he did what we needed him to do."

Despite his frustration at Chelsea's nervous finish, Lampard praised their impressive start.

"I'm happy with how the players are playing. It's great to watch," he said.

Watford could have lost by a much bigger margin and they remain bottom of the table, without a win in the league this season.

Chelsea made a blistering start that reaped an immediate reward when Abraham accelerated on Jorginho's sublime pin-point pass and lifted a cool finish over Ben Foster.

It was Abraham's 10th goal of his breakthrough campaign ending a five-game goal drought for the young England striker, who has scored seven goals in away games this season.

Just as significantly, Jorginho's role in the goal indicated the Italy midfielder's improved form in his second season with Chelsea.

Foster keeps it close

Only Foster stopped Chelsea's dominant display yielding more goals.

Foster kept out Abraham with a fine save, then from Willian's corner, Pulisic looped a header that forced an even better stop by the Watford keeper.

Having won their previous six games on the road in all competitions, Chelsea were in confident mood and Mason Mount was inches away from their second goal when his long-range blast was pushed onto the bar by Foster's fine save.

Chelsea had lost just one of their last 58 league games when leading at half-time, at Wolves in December 2018.

Foster was all that stood between the Blues and another away-day success as the 36-year-old denied Mount with another superb stop early in the second half.

Pulisic had scored a hat-trick in last weekend's win at Burnley and the United States winger was back on the scoresheet to put the result beyond doubt in the 55th minute.

Abraham was the provider with a low cross and Pulisic evaded Watford's dozing defence to tap in from close range.

Boos rang out when Daryl Janmaat was replaced by Kiko Femenia as Watford fans barraged boss Quique Sanchez Flores with chants of "you don't know what you're doing".

But Watford were given a controversial 80th-minute lifeline when VAR ruled that Jorginho had caught Deulofeu with a trip that drew a theatrical fall from the winger.

Deulofeu dusted himself down to slot home the penalty.

Foster, up for a last second free-kick, almost gave Watford a dramatic point, but his header was brilliantly saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was mobbed by celebrating team-mates at the final whistle.

The most adored jersey number after the iconic number seven has long been a curse for Chelsea Football Club. Over the years, the players who have donned the number nine jersey have met with a poor run of form, making things worse for their career and the club respectively. But the tides turned in the 2019/20 season for the Blues when young sensation Tammy Abraham decided to wear the esteemed number nine shirt.

Under the guidance of Frank Lampard, the 22-year-old has hit top form and is currently on a blistering goal-scoring streak, having scored eight goals in eight Premier League outings this season so far. The Chelsea striker joined the club’s academy system and was an integral part of the triumphant campaigns of Chelsea’s youth team in UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup in 2015 and 2016.

His ascent as the leading man for Chelsea has been astonishing, and after a phenomenal tenure on loan at Aston Villa in the previous season, where he netted 25 goals in 37 appearances in the league, the Blues had to bring him back. Although the fans were a little skeptical, the Blues manager Lampard wasn’t.

The Chelsea fans have endured the failure of players who have worn the infamous number nine jersey over the years. The form of Fernando Torres, the promise of Alvaro Morata and the strength of Gonzalo Higuain were all washed away when they put on the blue shirt with the number nine at the back.

Torres moved to Chelsea from Liverpool in the winter transfer window of the 2010/2011 season. His move from Merseyside wasn’t well received by fans at Anfield and his new life in London wasn’t something to cherish either. His goal-scoring rate dropped significantly ?In his first full season at Stamford Bridge, the Spaniard netted just six goals in 32 appearances in the league.

There was a further dip over the next two seasons and Chelsea’s patience was wearing out quickly. He was loaned out to AC Milan in 2014 and was subsequently loaned to Atletico Madrid until the end of 2015/2016 season. Another Spaniard and Torres?countryman, Morata, had to face similar wrath when he decided to go with the number nine.

After a successful endeavour with Real Madrid in the 2016/2017 season, Morata made a move to London. But what ensued was a drop in his speed, energy and work rate. A versatile player had to fight for a place in the starting 11 after a horrific 2017/2018 campaign with the Blues. In the subsequent season, he parted ways with Chelsea in the winter transfer window and moved to Atletico Madrid.

During his 16 appearances for the Blues in the league before his move to Madrid, he netted just five goals. The number nine curse had taken its toll on yet another star striker. It’s surprising to see Gonzalo Higuain’s name in the list. During his short stint at Stamford Bridge the previous season, the Argentinian was far from his best. His percentage of shots on target dropped drastically and his goal-scoring numbers took a hit. He could only manage five goals in 14 appearances in the league and moved back to Juventus.

Given the history of this jersey, Tammy’s decision to wear it was bold. The faith of Lampard has been repaid so far and the curse of the number nine shirt that Chelsea have endured for so long seems to be withering away.
